Hello!

I have a terrible cough that I can’t get rid of. Nothing seems to help. Do any mums have any secret remedies?

  • No – go to your GP, because a persistent cough can be a sign of serious underlying issues.

  • I’ve been dealing with an annoying cough for the last two weeks, and nothing seems to work. I guess it will just heal itself in time.

  • Buy the 20mls Blackmore black liquid echinchea . I was coughing for a long while until a friend told me to get this at a chemist or health food store and as soon as I took it , it was instant relief . After a few days my cough started to subside and then eventually left. It tastes awful , but it does the trick. Take with lemon or honey if it is too strong for you .

  • honey, dash of lemon in warm water

  • Senega & ammonia. Tastes terrible but works a treat, have a glass of milk or something else ready for after it

  • buy an elixir from the chemist, I find they work

  • I always take honey & lemon when I have a cough. Actually sometimes I just take it as a treat!

  • It depends if it’s a moist cough or a dry cough. If it’s a moist cough (and you’ll know, because you’ll feel like there’s “gunk” in your lungs that you need to cough up), you need an expectorant cough syrup. One of the cheapest and most effective is “Senega and Ammonia”, and you can get this at most chemists. The “chemist-own” brand is fine, and works the same as more expensive brands. It doesn’t taste particularly nice, but it does work. It helps you to “cough up” mucous & then you don’t have that awful-sounding moist cough anymore.

If it’s a dry cough, you need a cough suppressant, and again, some of the cheaper brands like Durotuss work just as well as the expensive stuff. Anything with Pholcodeine will suppress the dry cough.

  • I had a terrible cough when we moved interestate, I had it for 4 weeks, tried everything at the chemist, finally decided to see a doctor and was told it was due to stress – I didn’t think I was stressed. He gave me a script for some valium to relax me and yes it worked.

  • there are some good comments here

  • i hope some of this has helped

  • Yes vicks on the feet with socks I love mixing up the old lemon and honey and sucking on that it helps a treat.

  • If it hasn’t gone away after 3 weeks see your doctor. My mum used to give me butter and sugar mixed together. The butter soothes the throat and the sugar breaks up the cough.

  • Gargle apple cider it kills everything & last longer than cough syrup

  • Speak to doctor if persistent , I like warm water with lemon, honey and aspirin soothing and pain relief leave out aspirin if no pain.

  • Apple cider, that’s a good one

  • Another sounds silly but it works rub a good amount of Vicks vapour rub on your feet then put socks on also an asthma puffer

  • Sounds silly… but gargle coke… Not diet, but full strength full fizzy coke (and spit it out coz it’ll taste pretty foul).

  • Nuelin Syrup fantastic but unsure if you can buy it over the counter

  • Honey and lemon with a drop of brandy, squeeze lemon add hot water and honey to taste and brandy if you want to. also find that butter menthol help with the coughing fits, If cough persists go to the doctor you might need an inhaler in the short term.
