Hello!

My 3 year old wakes up numerous times throughout the night. I have a new born so it is getting to be exhausting. Should I get a weighted blanket? How do they help?

  • It’s fair to say that many weighted blanket manufacturers recommend they are not used for children aged less than 4 years. However, there is insufficient evidence to prove they are helpful or safe for any age group and experts advise against using them.


  • I use them when I am feeling anxious and it really does help.
    Just be sure to get one suited to her weight.
    Mine is too heavy for my size and after a while my body aches, and I usually don’t have the energy to lift it off.


  • I know my sister has had success with the weighted toys for her boys. And my husband had a weighted blanket and says it helps


  • I would be worth a try. If it doesn’t help over night they are still handy to have on hand to help sooth your child when they are anxious or stressed.


  • Do you know why your 3 year old is still waking up at night?. Maybe he / she is beginning to wake up when there is a need to go to the toilet. Variation of room temperature during the night?
    The blankets are also known as calming blankets. Some places have summer and winter ones


  • Weighted blankets aren’t normally used for a whole nights sleep. They are more as a soothing/calming technique for anxious, stressed or upset children.

  • I have a daughter with Asperger’s, (under the Autism umbrella), and she seems to find a lot of comfort from her weighted blanket, especially when she is anxious or distress, although she also uses it on many other occasions.

    I would recommend trying one. It has certainly helped my daughter.

    I also have a friend who makes them, and there is a high demand, not just from individuals, but from organisations involved in the care of children, (and also including adults who seem to find the same comfort from the use of these blankets.)

  • I wouldn’t use a weighted blanket unless you have spoken to a doctor. are they waking because you have a newbaby and they want your attention, and during the night it means they get snuggles without the baby being there? is it because they are cold? hot? thirsty? growing pains.


  • I know my 8 year old Grandson who is on the Autism scale loves the weighted blanket. He needs one at school just to relax him and stop him fidgeting/ grounding himself etc.


  • As an occupational thetapist I’ve seen them work wonders, but they do not work for everyone And you have to be careful with safety if they go up over the face whilst sleeping it is dangerous for breathing


  • I think you should check whether they are safe first. I know the blankets come in different kgs for different age groups. They can definitely be comforting but maybe check if it’s more a temperature thing waking her


  • I haven’t ever tried them… I think it’s psychological, but I am a cynic.


  • OMG, weighted blankets are amazing. I could sleep forever. Bought our daughter one for Christmas and I’ve used it as well. Best nights sleep ever. They are so heavy to carry but you don’t feel that weight when it’s on you. Make sure you get one with a removable cover so that can be washed. Bought my daughter’s from THERAPY BLANKET.
