Hello!

I am interested to know are you happy with your child traveling with a p plater?
And do you have any rules for travelling with them?

  • Following on from my last comment, my child has travelled with p-platers on short trips.

  • This hasn’t happened to me yet, but I would be very reluctant. It would depend on the p-plater and whether I think he/she is a responsible driver.

  • Think it all depends on how well you know and how comfortable you are with this P-plater and if you trust him/her with your child.

  • It really depends on the driver. My brother, for example, is a little reckless in my opinion and I don’t feel comfortable in the car with him.

  • If I know the teen and how they drive yes, if not then no. I know my child is responsible but there is always peer pressure. I guess it comes down to trusting your child and their decisions.

  • It depends on how comfortable I am with their driving and also their personal maturity. I haven’t been in that situation yet so not sure…

  • As a general rule, no we don’t allow our kids to travel with a P-plater. It did cause a big stir when I refused to allow my kids to go with my sister-in-law, but she has already been involved in a few accidents and I can’t trust her behind the wheel. I’m certainly not keen to let my kids travel with friends I don’t know well when they get a little older either.
For the very few exceptions, we have already driven with that person, they have more experience and can drive defensively, zero alcohol, I know who else is in the car, I know where they are going and the route they are taking.

  • Depends on how well I know the kid, how long they have been driving, where they are going etc.

  • I would let my child travel with my nephew who is a P plater only because I know how he drives – which is extremely cautiously and he’s also had his licence for quite a while

  • It depend on how long they had the P- Plate and do I trust them. My younger sister was on P-Plate (Green) when my daughter was born and she used to come and take her for drive and I was fine with that. But if I don’t know the person I won’t.

  • My husband is 26 and still on his learners he has a learning disability and in order for me to teach him I have no other choice but to let the kids in the car with us. I always tell him to pull over if he needs to and am always watching. As for p players I will always tell them to drive sensibly and be extra cautious.

  • If I know & trust them, then yes I would allow it.

  • I would suggest that its ok but expain they are never to be left in a car if they need to run into a shop or back into the hosue for any reason. also the kids locks on the door of the car must be set at all time while your kids are in their car. The reason why i did that onc, i went back into the house for a minute to get more nappies as i forgot the nappy bay and my two year old unclipped his belt and thought it would be funny to hide behind the back seat in our four wheel drive leaving my 6 month old in her seat. it sent me into total melt down. As it took a few minutes to find him. They need to know if the kid locks are not set on the doors things can happen and kids have a mind of their own and can get out in a instant.

  • Yes. My son is a p-plater and takes his little brother and sister places. :)

  • I have a family member that is on her Ps and it would depend on where she had to drive my kids. If it was just up the road to the park or to her house it wouldn’t be a problem. But not on long trips not yet

  • It hasn’t come up for me. My oldest is 15.5 and most of his friends are already 16, so it will no doubt come up soon, and I know I will be discouraging it, and I hope the parents of the P platers will too. Our youngest will be 5 when our eldest could potentially be a P-plater, and it wont be happening as I know how distracting it can be.

  • Some young parents are P platers themselves. Any parent young or older can be involved in an accident, not necessarily their fault. They may be in the wrong place at the time. I heard about an accident today where a car was hit from behind, spun around and landed on its roof. I haven’t seen the car as yet but suspect the other car was speeding well over the limit as it was in a 40kph area and hit on only part of its rear and that’s why it spun and rolled over. I saw a similar accident out the front of where I worked a few years ago. It has earlier passed on of our company vehicles at high speed. Some P platers tend to be more cautious because they know they could well catch the attention of the Police.

  • How about going for a drive the the said P-Plater and see what sort of driver they are.
Some are very good drivers and very respectful of the roads. Remember they do not want to be in a accident… who does. Make sure your child is in the correct seat. If a baby seat is required have it fitted yourself with the authorized seat provider. Trust is a conversation you must have with this carer of your child.

  • It depends on the amount of trust you have with the driver. If you believe they will protect your child no matter what and the seat is fitted correctly then I wouldn’t see a problem with it

  • No matter who they are I will never let a P plater drive my children in the first few months of getting their licence. Yes after a bit if I am happy with their driving.
