Hello!

My husband often gets home from work around 8.30pm/9pm or later. My primary school aged family eat dinner around 6/7pm. I am always torn between eating with the children early, or my husband later. Sometimes it’s easy to make a meal that lasts across all dinner times, on other days I feel like I am cooking all night. I don’t like to, but sometimes I also end up eating 2 smaller meals – not so good for me, but keeps others happy. What do you do in situations like this?

  • We all eat at different times as hubby comes home late

  • My partner works FIFO and when he’s home he is quite busy so he pretty much doesn’t eat dinner with us much at all which is such a shame I think.

  • Mine is similar as daughter has different uni times, hub works evenings , and it can be minus someone and even sometimes on my own which I cant do anything about . When I have extra food it does make cooking less if you have leftovers so maybe do that often and just go with the flow , so that you don’t stress out .

  • we all eat dinner together and it is good to chat.

  • We always eat together or wait if some-one is going to be late!

  • Smaller meals are also good for digestion!

  • I’m torn on this one. Dinner time has always been spent together in our house. I’d feel guilty if he missed out on meal time with the kids. My kids couldn’t wait until hubby got home for dinner at that time though. I’d probably take advantage of some kid free time with my hubby and enjoy a meal together without having to ask anyone to get their fingers out of their food or reminding anyone to keep eating.

  • I have littlies that eat 5-5.30pm so quite often my husband misses eating with us. Because of this we make a big deal of eating together when he is home on time & the nights he’s late I potter around while he eats dinner then we sit together to watch tv.

  • That’s a tough question! For us it has always been important to eat together every evening. We have dinner around 7-7:15. When our daughter was younger we managed to eat a little earlier.
I’m not sure what I’d do in your situation.

  • I have this problem too i normally eat with the kids because my darling three year old apparently needs to give me details about how i cooked dinner and how he is going to eat it sigh got to love them. I get my three year old to help me make a plate for daddys dinner and i normally either pop it in the microwave or in the fridge depending how late he is going to be. With also a note from him to his daddy. I then when my partner gets home sit down with him with a cold drink or hot drink and just talk while he eats. Ive discovered this works well for us n im not eating two dinners

  • Eat dinner with the kids and dessert with your husband!

  • Mix it up. Sone nights eat with the kids and some nights wait and eat with your hubby. Keeps everyone happy
