Hello!

I was wondering if there anyone else out there that has this problem? I seem to not be able to get rid of anything and its such an annoying problem. I even feel a need to keep receipts. Does anyone have any techniques on how to stop before my whole house becomes full of things i hoard.

  • I’m someone who keeps quite a bit too, things i think that might be useful still, whereas my husband likes to chuck things out. Keeping important receipts might be useful for the warranty period, not entirely a bad thing ;)

  • I find this hard too. One way to deal with it is to have a timeframe – if you don’t have a use for something in that timeframe, get rid of it. Eg I clear out my receipts at the end of each financial year – only a few need to be kept long term.

  • i know how you feel. Hoarding is a real problem. For me I just made a decision to get rid of anything j don’t need and not think twice. I also found its good to do it night or day begins rubbish collection day so you can’t retrieve anything.

  • My hubby is like this. I regularly go round and have clean ups to keep it under control. I dread the day we’ll have to pack up and move :/ We’ll need oodles of skip bins I think

  • My brother in law keeps all receipts and tallys them up afterwards so he knows how much he spends . I only keep the ones for warranty such as electricals etcs. Ask yourself why are you keeping it . If it is not for a warranty or return of a product throw it out .

  • To stop any more hoarding, take a day to think about buying anything new and bringing it into your home. The feeling and urge may pass.

  • Work on an area at a time and maybe enlist the help of books or friends? Books on overcoming hoarding and friends to help you declutter!

  • The only time I was able to get rid of some stuff when when I was pregnant :(

  • yep have a good clean out and tackle it one room at a time.

  • I get like that sometimes but not for very long then I get a cleaning buzz and go through all my receipts all my old clothes and everything else and have a great day cleaning up

  • It is hard to get rid of items from the past but as you move on,you decide what is important and what needs to go! Best of luck!

  • I seriously hate getting rid of things everytime has some sort of sentimtal value. worst trait about me : (

  • yes omg i have so much from kmart hehe

  • yes and I unfortunately have very limited storage space so I used to get extremely frustrated. However, my friend has put me onto a Japanese cleaning method call the Konmari Method! It teaches you to declutter and let go of things. It is a slow process so you can learn to live minimalistic. There is a book on it…check it out! I am in love with it and have finally convinced my hubby who is the family hoarder!

  • I am the opposite, I feel better with less. Hubby likes to keep, I tell him that if you have not used it in 6 months, no matter what it is it’s going, bin or charity.

  • My hubby is exactly the same. To make things worse, he brings broken stuff home from other places, with the intention of fixing it and using it. Never happens :/ I end up moving it all to the shed then it slowly ‘disappears.’

  • I don’t have this compulsion, but wish you well – I have the opposite problem, I give things away and regret it LOL
