Ridges in the fingernails are often normal signs of aging. Slight vertical ridges commonly develop in older adults. In some cases, they may be a sign of health problems like vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. Deep horizontal ridges, called Beau’s lines, may indicate a serious condition.
There are many reasons for ridged nails but the most common is aging, as we age the nail matrix becomes atrophied in areas resulting in longitudinal ridging of nails. They are like wrinkles in the nails.
It is individual and may be natural or may be for other reasons? I had mine checked by my GP and I would suggest a visit to a GP for anyone worried about their nails or any part of their body. It helps to put the mind at ease.
Could be aging, nail injury, trauma, underlying medical conditions, metabolic disturbances or malnutrition. When they are severe and last of a longer time you could seek advice from a naturopath or women doctor
Are these ridges from left to right or are they lines travelling from the bed of the nail to the tip? It can be old age, poor diet or even stress. I suffer from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome,( CRPS), which causes my nails to grow really fast and break easily. So I have all of these little indentations in my nails from my nails growing and stopping in quick spurts. Google photos of longitudinal striations on fingernails caused by CRPS and see if they are like yours.
It is meant to be more common with ageing (like wrinkes but for the nail) although can indicate a more serious medical condition, like Rhumatoid Arthritis, or a vitamin deficiency.
