Hello!

My daughter is 8 years old and absolutely LOVES to dance. She currently goes to dancing 3 days a week (for a total of 5 hours a week). Hubby thinks it’s too much. I think it teaches her discipline and she more than comfortably gets all her other school work done. What do you guys think is acceptable?

  • I think if she enjoys it, then why not!

  • If she’s happy and wants to do it and its not effecting her school work etc and you can afford it then I can’t see a problem at all.. There’s nothing wrong with doing what you love :)

  • If she’s enjoying it, that’s fine. I’d keep an eye on her, though. My kids have dropped activities as they got older – either done them for shorter times per week, or sometimes stopped for a term or two before doing them again.

  • I danced when I was younger and I LOVED it too. If she is happy and coping with school etc, I think it would do more damage to restrict it.

  • If she’s coping well, loves it and it doesn’t impact her homework I don’t see a reason why not to, unless it becomes too much for yourself/your family.

  • we have dancing here but they only go once a wekk

  • My kids had a sport they liked and always coped. If dancing is her only sport I think that is fine . Dancing is great exercise and fit for the body . If she is getting low grades from school and she is not coping , I think you will know about it so maybe keep an eye out on her reports and homework etc. I will only put a stop to any activities if they neglect their schoolwork . Kids need exercise regardless so dancing is her sport for enjoyment .

  • that sounds fine for her. as long as she is happy and doing what she needs to do, it is fine.

  • I think 5 hours is fine. I wouldn’t do any more than that though.

  • I don’t see it an issue. My kids don’t do anything yet, but will be looking at some sports next year. I have friends whos kids do something every afternoon is something different and they don’t get to bed till 9pm after school work is done. That to me is too much. 5 hours a week is nothing.

  • If she loves it then why not? So good for her fitness and so much else!

  • If sges enjoying it and not getting too tired I don’t see a problem .. But I know a child whose mother has him doing .. Karate one night , cricket , swimming lessons and piano lessons all in the same week .. I personally think it’s way too much for a child of 7 to be doing but each together own

  • If she loves it and she’s not tired, I would let her go on. Absolutely!

  • As long as she wakes up happy in the mornings and has enough sleep and her school work isnt suffering i wouldnt have a problem with my kid spending that much time on a hobby. My son does karate twice a week and swimming once a week, sometimes he does miss out on a karate class due to been to tierd but its a pay as you go one so there is no issues.
