Hello!

Without going into too much detail – I have been on anti anxiety medication for about a bit over a year now. The dr has me slowing coming off them as hubby and I would love to try for another baby. My question is – I’m on the lowest dose now but am finding that I have those feelings creeping back again and can feel myself now getting a bit snappy. I’m not due to see the dr again until next year but I was just wondering…is there another anxiety medication that is safe during pregnancy, as the one I’m on currently is not. I don’t think I will cope without them but we are kind of desperate for another baby.

  • I worked as psychiatric nurse and what I was taught is that ;
Probably Safe Meds are: SSRIs (Such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil), Tricyclic Antidepressants and Buspirone.
Probably Unsafe Meds are: Benzodiazepines (may cause addiction in infants), Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Lithium.

  • Good luck with it all. I hope you have some luck finding the answers you need.

  • I know a lady who got pregnant unexpectedly. because of a medical condition she had been advised that she could never have children. Her Obst. immediately weaned her off what she was taking whilst starting another one at a low dose. She was lucky she had no problems with that.

  • i haven’t but i have a friend who has to take medication and she had her babies. i never thought to ask how she was going with that because it is her business. yeah the doc knows your medical history and hopefully he can work out something perfect for you!

  • Thanks Kasey x that’s what I was asking originally.

I would never do anything without consulting my Dr. I’m reducing my dose on his advice. I don’t feel the need to see him any earlier or another Dr. I was just wondering whether anyone had been on anxiety meds while pregnant/if there were safe ones available as we never discussed that in my last appointment.
The reason we are wanting to have another baby is because my egg reserves are extremely low for my age and we have a few other things working against us. We had to undergo fertility treatments to fall pregnant with our daughter so don’t want to leave it any longer just incase we are unable to have another one.

Thank you everyone for your advice :)

  • I’ve been on medication for a few years now and fell pregnant this year, I discussed it with my GP and we decided it was better for me & bub to keep on it. Mine however is safe to use in pregancy……I ended up having to go up alittle at the beginning of the pregnancy as I could feel the anxiety hitting me again (my hormones played havoc on my mind & body) which helped me greatly. My GP even referred me to specialists at my local hospital to help me throughout. I’d suggest to talk to your GP about your options and it’s really up to you whether or not you want to take medication or can cope without whilst being pregnant.

  • Hello there, I wouldn’t be trying for a Baby just yet , I don’t understand why it’s so agent for you to fall pregnant I would suggest you give your body a rest from your medication will seek advice.

  • If you are desparate for another child, perhaps see another GP in the meantime for advice. For anything to do with medications, it is best to see a medical profession to be safe and you can always explain your history anyway. I like to have a couple of doctors I trust only because they tend to take leave whenever I need to see them . Good luck with your planning :)

  • I don’t know much about medication in detail.
But i was on medication for anxiety also when i fell pregnant with my daughter. My dr said that leaflet inside said nothing had been proved ‘dangerous’ for the baby….just that they say they are unsure. No mum would be willing to risk their child to test these kind of medications and companies don’t want to leave themselves open to a lawsuit.
My doc told me i could take antihistamines (for hayfever) yet the box said to avoid if pregnant..
    I

  • Best to see your doctor and if your unable to see the particular one who has been treating you maybe go back to your GP and discuss and get advise about medication. They can also refer you to different Psychologists or Psychiatrists who may be able to provide non medicinal therapies to use along with medication. Good luck and best of wishes.

  • Best to go back to your doctor earlier and get their advice and support and they can also give you referrals for support and treatment. Good Luck.

  • As others have said, best to ask your doctor. But personally i have a friend who had 3 children while on a low dose. Yes there were risks, but she worked with her doctor to find a dose and the impact of her anxiety meant staying on meds was best for her and her babies. Healthy, functioning mum is important. All her kids are fine and she coped so for her the meds were the best option. But every circumstance is different so please seek more advice from your doctor as to what would be best for you. Good luck!

  • I would think that only a medical professional could provide advice on this. I wish you all the very best with your planning, and future life with your growing family.

  • I agree with the previous comment! would suggest you go see your doctor and talk through whats happening before christmas, My doctor explained to me about the different catagories of meds that some are not safe at all while others carry a lower risk of causing issues. Which helped me make a informed decision of what was best for me and bubs. i ended going back on my lower risk ones half way through my pregnancy.

  • If you believe that the bad feelings are coming back, maybe it’s a sign that you stopped too early with your medications. Is there no way to see your doctor or another one before Christmas time? So to clarify your options.
