Hello!

I was given a garden bed and want to plant some herbs/veggies or fruit – can I have some recommendations for what I should plant? I’m not garden savvy at all! Must be child friendly!

  • Cucumbers are easy to grow, and strawberries.

  • strawberries, tomatoes, basil and parsley to name a few.

  • we began with strawberries, baby carrots, cucumber and lettuce. the kids love watering each day and counting the fruit/veggies growing and watching them grow. I used the yates gardening website too

  • Check out the ABC Veggie guide, it is a free app which helps you plan a veggie patch according to which part of Australia you live in. Lots of schools use it, there is lots of information for the kids to look up and learn about what they are planting and eating.

  • We planted carrots, beetroot, rosemary, parsley, mint and come sunflowers. Our little green thumb loved it. Good Luck.

  • Lettuce is a great one along with cherry tomatoes

  • Tomatoes are great! very easy to grow, we plant tomatoes every year when is season they sit in an area that gets shade for half the day sun for the rest and my son waters them every night once the sun starts going down! They thrive every year! and it does not take long for the fruit to start growing.

  • I have a 9 & 10 year old they love tomatoes.we have very limited garden space.so we Brought inexpensive pots and have planted truss & cherry tomatoes. They currently growing like mad. My children love watering them and have been able to pick the ready tomatoes and eat them before they’re brought inside

  • Sweet corn if you can – children love them and they don’t have to be full cobs to be eaten – children can’t wait! – so no nasty tummy upsets because they ate them unripe. It’s good for children who won’t eat vegies cause they eat these because they grew them themselves. It helps if you don’t watch them picking the produce too.

  • Tomatoes are really easy to grow – try cherry or grape varieties as they grow quickly and are really sweet so young children tend to enjoy them. Peas are also easy to grow and littlies love popping open the pods and actually end up eating the veggies as they grew them themselves.
