Hello!

Is it normal for your hair to start falling out quite a lot after giving birth? My little one has just turned 16 weeks and for the last couple of weeks my hair has been continuously falling out quite a lot. Am I going to go bald or anything, and can I still colour my hair?

  • Oh yes! I had lots of hair loss after each pregnancy, mostly around my hair line. I had little wispy bits growing back for ages. It would come out on huge strands when I washed my hair.

  • This is very normal because when we’re pregnant we tend to get fuller hair from the hormones and after giving birth it’s normal for it to begin to fall particularly if your breadtfeeding.

  • get a blood test, see what you are lacking in and get some GP help love

  • It’s normal. I went through this after each pregnancy and when it first happened I was freaking out. My doc told me that during pregnancy you grow more hair because of surge of hormones and it’s normal to loose after giving birth and if your breadt feeding that can make you loose hair too.

  • I wouldnt worry but would mention it the the doctor at your next check up. I lost a lot of hair after giving birth. Didnt you notice while you were pregnant how lovely shiney and full your hair looked.

  • this is natural because hair goes into a growing phase while you are pregnant and sheds all the excess hair sometime after having a baby

  • I definitely wouldn’t colour your hair while it is falling out. Go and see a Dr and put your mind at ease.

  • I hope by now you have checked with your GP and had blood tests to find the cause in your own case. Even though it has happened to others, you want more than their experience to guide you because you might have a different underlying condition. Best wishes and I hope if all is not well that it soon will be : )

  • I don’t think you’re going to go bald. You would’ve noticed it stopped falling out during pregnancy. I’m quite hirsute ( hairy ) & even the hair on my legs stopped growing during pregnancy. Now the hair grows & falls so fast I’ve been getting ingrown hair cysts ( yuck ) on bikini line. It will fall out a lot, don’t be alarmed.

  • I would stop colouring my hair, and speak to your dr

  • I’m sure it has something to do with breast feeding and hormones. After I had my third child I was in the shower and my hair was falling out in chunks..at first I thought it was coming from the roots but discovered it was breaking middle-up..not completely from the roots. I was so upset I couldn’t get it off my mind. I never had this problem with my other two. I have stopped breast feeding and my hair has stopped falling out. I started using argan oil and tried so many products but nothing really worked. I’m sure it can be the breast feeding. But ur hair will grow back :-) I quite like my hair and the fact some fell out, it’s made my hair kind of jaggered lol.

  • there are some good comments here

  • i wouldnt colour your hair just yet just wait for a couple of weeks and se how you hair is after

  • My hair stared falling out at 3 months after giving birth too. My baby is now almost 6 months and its still falling out but has slowed to a lot. It is a lot thinner than before but I have heard that it is really common and related to hormones dropping at the 3 month mark.

  • I thin it is most probably all very normal.

  • This happened to a friend. See a natrapath…. They have an ointment and it will b back to normal very quick

  • This is a normal thing for women who have had a baby due to the hormones dropping. if you are concerned go see your GP for a check up as you could be low in iron.

  • This is hormonal and completely natural. I would suggest avoiding harsh chemical like bleach until it slows down

  • yes, mine did for about 6 months!

  • Perfectly normal for lots of hair loss after pregnancy but if it does continue and concerns you, definately go to your Doctor and get checked. After my first baby, I had heaps of hair loss and it turned out I had an overactive thyroid which can be common after pregnancy. Other symptoms I had was losing weight and feeling hot all the time.
Second time round I had bad hair loss again but thyroid levels were normal so it just goes to show that sometimes it just happens for no reason. Although it’s scary when your hair is falling out, it won’t continue forever but it might take awhile longer.
