  • Sometimes I think you have to respect other people’s space (eg hubby’s shed!) but where it is a clear shared area (like kitchen or lounge) then it has to be functional. Try and give everybody a space where they can keep as messy as they like, and just declutter the rest, making it clear it’s a shared functional space. It gets tricky in bedrooms, and try and have your own oasis where it’s as nice as you’d like it to be.

  • I’m the only one in our household that likes to de-clutter. Often I will just pick a drawer or small area to tidy up and at other times I’m in a de-cluttering mood and I feel like I’m a tornado sweeping through the house :)

  • I think appropriate storage spaces are key and being a bit ruthless if you don’t use it you probably don’t need it

  • I have the same problem. I do go about it one room at a time and anything that hasn’t been used in 6 moths I throw out, usually when no one else is home.

  • watch the show that Marie Kondo did, or borrow her book from the library (don’t buy it as that just adds more clutter!). She is brilliant!

  • Slowly box things up and when no body notices after a while throw them out

  • Get really rigid about rules like “If I find it on the floor, I’ll confiscate it.” That does at least help with the mess, and one day they might actually put things where they belong.

  • I like to watch some of the decluttering and organizational you tube videos. It helps me as I am a visual learner. There are lots of different ones to choose from. The videos I especially like are where they just do one room at a time and they show you how they do it. All the best with your decluttering. The main thing is to do it a bit at a time, otherwise it is too overwhelming.

  • I tackle one room at a time, have a rubbish box and a donate box, if it hasn’t been used/worn in 6months to a yr that obviously it’s not needed.

  • i live in a garage converted into a granny flat with my 6m old partner and me i have found plastic baskets to store stuff in to be a good way to get more on the shelves i also have these little square boxes to put my bubs toys in and things to keep the floor looking not as bad. I have an extra thin shelf in my hallway to put things on aswell so my floor is usually pretty good now attached photo of lounge and hallway so you can see what i mean by the shelf and box for toys :)

  • In my idea you don’t need to get overwhelmed by trying to do everything at once. Choose one room and start with that. Everything out of the closets and drawers and just put back what you really want to keep. The rest can go. You can sell it, you can donate it, you can throw it away if it’s in bad conditions. But try to keep just things you love. We all tend to accumulate too much. But having a decluttered house really improve our mood. You’ll see! :-)

  • You need to really think about what to let go of and what to hang onto, this is something l have to do soon and the sooner it is done the better! With clothes the old rule is if they haven’t been worn in two years throw them out! Good Luck!

  • I find this a hard task too. I try to get my kids involved in their rooms- giving toys they don’t want anymore/ have outgrown to the second hand shop, putting stuff away in boxes that we don’t necessarily want to give away yet. I try to do the same around the house.

  • You could always do what my husband does, he starts and if you don’t keep up he gets rid of all of your stuff.

  • I find this to be an ongoing battle. When I am trying to de clutter I watch an episode of ‘Hoarders’ whilst I am tackling my own piles of stuff. It sounds silly, but I find it does help. There are some basic messages in the episodes that help me to see what is important. Best of luck ????

  • Start in one room, doesn’t matter if you don’t finish that room in one day. Just start ???? 3 x storage containers. 1 for garbage, 1x donate, 1 x sell.

  • you could try a “chuck it bucket” if you find something left out throw it in the chuck it bucket and if the person hasn’t put it away within a set time it goes in the bin or the charity shop (it also goes by another name not quite so pg rated) In your wardrobe turn all you coat hangers in one direction, as you wear the clothes turn the hangers back around, after a set time donate, sell or throw away any clothes not worn on the hangers not turned around
