Hello!

My daughter turns 6 this year and I’m planning on making her a decent looking cake that hopefully also taste nice. Any tips would be appreciated

  • Your Birthday cake looks so good and so happy she loved it

  • Pinterest is always the best place in future for cake and party ideas

  • So glad to hear the birthday cake was a hit with your daughter.

  • Thanks ladies. In the end i made a two layered cake the top was chocolate and bottom vanilla,it was finished in a bubblegum flavoured buttercream that was a violet colour. My daughter said it looked beautiful and tasted great. So i was happy

  • A great way to find ideas is looking on Pinterest. My daughter is celebrating her 2nd birthday and I’m not a great cake baker, however I found a Troll cake that looks awesome, is linked to their blog that gives the super easy steps to make it. Life saver!

  • A colleague at work said she makes the simplest cake ever that still looks impressive – she buys a ready made sponge cake, whips together half cream and half Nutella then uses that as a filling and frosting for outside the cake then tops it with Smarties. She said her kids request it year after year.

  • Don’t over beat butter icing as it will start to curdle and always use a good quality butter or margarine. Google cakes in the theme you want to do, this will give you some really good ideas. Also practice makes perfect, don’t beat yourself up if it’s not as good as you hoped. It can take many cakes to get it right and to know what works best. The thing to remember is you tried :)

  • Work on what her interests are and Google those type of cakes. She’ll love that her Mum made a special cake for her. All the best.

  • There are some gorgeous cakes on this site and I belong to some pages on social networks that have easy to make cakes and cake hacks which are cheap and gorgeous. Maybe google and find one that suits you.

  • Planet Cake cook book gives you lots of examples how to do very nice cakes, step by step. You can also find lots of things on YouTube. Good luck and happy birthday to your daughter.

  • place in the fridge before levelling the cake, this will firm it up and make it easier to cut. Also apply a thin layer of buttercream icing and place in fridge to firm up the icing, this is called a crumb coat and will help make a nice, crumb free second coating which you can put on after the first one has set.

  • Oh! I came across this cake today and I find it so cute. “Frozen” themed. And no baking involved!! :-)
