  • This is on our to do list.

  • It’s cost effective if you bring your car I feel. We traveled at night but it was not comfortable at all

  • We haven’t yet but would like to some day.

  • We go on the Spirit of Tasmania every couple of years to visit family – always at peak period unfortunately because it costs a fortune then. After our last visit, I wrote a post about planning for the trip and what to expect. Might be useful for you – http://blog.familyfriendlyaccommodation.com.au/2016/04/03/spirit-of-tasmania/

  • I went years ago as a teenager with my family and had a great time and I’m pretty sure it’s been all refurbished recently. I’d love to take my kids. It’s perfect when you want to take your car and do the loop of Tassie.

  • During the tourist season it it advisable to book in advance or you may miss out and be delayed for a few days.
Unless you want to book a fly/drive package – some have accomodation included in the prices OR do it by coach, the ferry is your best option for a family. Luggage weight and bag sizes aren’t restricted. You can take spare water to drink or for your vehicle in case of an emergency, and food. I don’t know if it is checked – I very much doubt it. If you fly, it definitely is and may also be confiscated.

  • l haven’t but l have heard many positive remarks from people who have, sounds like a great holiday!

  • Good idea to invest in seasick pills too! ;)

  • Thanks for all of the good tips, has been really helpful!

  • If you want to travel around tassie for a couple of weeks, it quite cost effective as you can pack as much as you want in the car everything thing you could possibly need … you are not limited to a suit case.. we have done both where we hired a car and took our own… Taking our own won out as we knew the car. didnt have to pay for the extra hire insurance on the borrowed car wich i advise incase of accident… And if you get sea sick just make sure you take a couple a tablets not long just before incase of a rough crossing but we didnt have one at all….

  • We went as a day trip as a fundraiser for black Saturday a few years ago and it was awsome. I was a little concerned going with two toddlers but no problems at all.

  • It can be cost effective, depending on what time of year you want to travel, how you want to travel (in a basic cabin, a fancy cabin or in a recliner on deck) and what you’re taking with you. The trip is pleasurable if it’s not too rough and if you don’t get sea sick
