Hello!

Hi MoM’s I need advice, I have a 7 yr old daughter who is having toilet accidents. The reason is, she is too busy doing what she is doing and won’t stop to go to the toilet and wets her pants. This only seems to be happening in the last few months as she is completely toilet trained and has been since she was 2.5. If I’m with her in the room I can recognise the toilet dance and tell her to go but if I’m off doing washing or something and can’t tell her to go, she wets. This so far seems to be just at home and hasn’t happened at school yet, but I’m worried about the shame it will cause her if it happens when I’m not around to fix things up for her. How can I get her to realise that no matter what she just has to stop what she is doing and to go?

  • It seems she gets very preoccupied with whatever she’s doing. I’d get her to go to the toilet more regularly just so that she doesn’t get to the point that she’s bursting to go.

  • Maybe ask her why she doesn’t go when she feels the need to?
I’m sure its not the case but there could be an underlying psychological or medical issue.
It might be worthwhile speaking to your GP & asking her school teachers if they have noticed anything & how often she does go to the toilet whilst at school (during classes).

  • Maybe try letting her know that if you hold your bladder for too long that it can cause infection and it will start hurting everytime she goes to the toilet. Ask why she does it at home but doesnt do it at school. They might get told when toilet breaks are.

  • I would just go back to the basics, before you go out, before school, before dinner etc….. she will get the idea again.

  • Just remind her every so often to go. Even before she does her dance, ask her if she needs to go.

  • I hope as time has gone by it has all sorted itself out.

  • she will learn to do it herself, there is nothing wrong and she will probably never do it at school because of her friends and the embarrassment of it

  • You can get little timers that look like watches to remind kids to go, rest assured she is not the only one!

  • Hope her toilets problems are getting better

  • Hope everything’s improving!

  • I hope you’ve had some success

  • If she does do it at school it will be an ‘event’ and may help her to stop.

  • How is she now? Any luck with the advice below?

  • Have you had any luck with convincing her to go as soon as she needs to?

  • How is she now? :)

  • I really hope you have found some helpful suggestions here.

  • Maybe if you see the signs – my youngest use to hold on that much as she was too busy, and when she decided she couldn’t hold on any more, she’d take a run to the toilet 90% of the time not make it.

  • I hope you manage to find a solution to this. I’m not sure about forcing them to go to the toilet every 30 mins – an hour, I’m sure I had read somewhere that forcing yourself to urinate too frequently can lead to other problems.

  • My son occasionally does this too. I just take the training back a notch and keep reminding him and taking him to the loo until he gets out of the habit.

  • remind her at regular intervals when she is at home pack a spare set when she is at school
