Hello!

I have one of my daughter’s romper suits that I would like to keep for her as it was a gift from a special friend. Unfortunately there are some mildew spots/ stains on one of her sleeves (near the wrist where I suspect she sucked on it) and I can’t get rid of it.

I have tried soaking it in vinegar and washing it. I have tried stain removers and soaking it before washing it again but the mildew remains. I would be really grateful for any ideas or tips on how I might be able to fix this problem.

Thank you in advance!

  • hydrogen peroxide and then put it in the sun

  • The other day my daughter left her damp swimming clothes in a cotton bag and the bag went all mouldy. I treated it with bicarb and vinegar with no effect. Then I scrubbed it with sunlight block soap, with no effect, next I used some bleach and diluted it with 30 seconds or so and that worked.

  • try bicarb and soda water mixed to a thick paste. Put it on and leave overnight…

  • I’ve never had any luck removing mould (lived in the tropics and it’s pretty much un avoidable) Would have never thought to use exit mould on clothes though!

  • There are some great ideas here to try… thanks

  • I had this problem and had to bin the item. Exit mould is bleach and I thought it will change the colour of the item? Vinegar kills mould and bleach lifts the stain but I’ve had no success with clothing – how did you go?

  • honestly if this happened to my children’s clothes ( wet season and unknowingly left in the basket for a few days) i would just throw it out but you could try bleach.

  • Try rubbing it with a lemon and leaving it in the sun to dry then do it again, then wash it in lux flakes or sunlight soap, always works for me.

  • Exit Mould seems to be very popular.

  • I don’t know whether Orange Power Pre-Wash Stain Remover would work. I have used it on a few stains that have been though a couple of washes as they are clothes which belong to a toddler I mind. What I do is I spray it, give it a quick brisk rub, put it in a bucket of water for a few minutes then wash it. On a few occasions I have an item with a fairly bad stain in the bucket of water overnight when it doesn’t like the stain is going to come out and not been able to find it the next morning. I might be lucky but I have never had the colours run from doing that all. I have used it on romper suits with no problems.

  • l would take it to the drycleaners to see if they can do anything,if not bin it.

  • wow there are some great tips here I have a similar prob so im off the buy some exit mould

  • Wow, never thought of exit mould, I will have to try that next time too. :)

  • I would actually seek some free professional advice from a dry cleaner on what they use to remove mildew spots; if they can be removed? I would be very careful about using harsh chemicals on clothing as you said she sucks the clothing. Also; I imagine harsh chemicals would bleach the clothing?

  • Lemon juice on the mark/stain and place in the sun may help. Wishing you well.

  • I use Exit Mould only on white cotton garments it really works. Then wash by hand. Run under the tap with the water running away from the garment as it will take the colour from where it lands.

  • The romper is pale pink and white (thin) stripes. I will try a little bit of Exit Mould and see how that goes. Fingers crossed! Thanks!

  • If the garment is white try spraying it with Exit Mould only where the mildew is & wash as normal. It works!

  • I would have suggested vinegar but you’ve tried that. Other than soaking in napisan, I’m not sure there is much you can do.
