Hello!

Hi MoM! Wondering if anyone has some tips for getting my 8 month old to drink formula? My milk supply is drying up rapidly but he absolutely refuses to take formula – ive tried a few brands but to no avail and I’m starting to get a little worried. He is happy to have breast milk from a bottle and I’ve tried mixing breast milk with formula but he won’t take that either. How do you get a baby to drink formula? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

  • Lots of patience and perseverance. Just stick with it and bub will adjust eventually

  • I was very lucky that both my kids took S26 as soon after birth and my son took extra S26 because he was always hungry and then he drank it fulltime. In your case perhaps just check with the childhood nurse if you can pop him to normal milk only because in a few months he will have to try and drink it anyway . The only benefit of the formulas is the added nutrients . but if it is good to start now ( provided he is not lactose intolerance ) why not start now and you won’t have to think about it later. Hope it works out .

  • you can add a little bit of vanilla custard to the bottle it’ll taste a little bit sweeter and it still fills them up.

  • The sweeter formulas are better accepted as breastmilk it naturally sweet. Have you tried nan comfort or similac? My baby hated all others but will take these two. Best of luck

  • I do hope that managed to find success without too much distress. I know it is a difficult time.

  • Hope you managed to have some success.

  • I was going to suggest mixing the 2 milks together, but it seems you have already tried that-maybe try a lower ratio of the formula to start with.

  • I never did so good luck to you

  • I hope you had some success

  • I’d express and start adding a little formula into the expressed milk, then slowly increase the amount of formula with each feed.

  • Mix them. Breast n formula. And Avnet bottles r most like breast so they say

  • Also try the Avent bottle with the teat like a nipple and best of luck =)

  • Try karicare :)

  • Start with a tiny amount of formula in the breast milk bottle then increase slowly

  • Change the bottle – use the Tommee Tippee fat bottles as it’s likely the breast he’s mising, not the taste of the milk.

  • if taking from a bottle, add 1 scoop of formula to breast milk and as bub get used to it add a few more scoops and then decrease the amount of breast milk in to formula

  • perseverance, he will take it if he is hungry enough

  • Maybe expressing more will increase your milk supply at least until you have worked out which formula he prefers.

  • I would have suggested the breastmilk/formula in the bottle but that obviously didn’t work perhaps keep trying different ones till you find one he is happy with. There is one that is apparently very close to breast milk but I’m not sure which one.

  • As others said get someone else to do the Fed. Even months after weaning sometimes bub will play up for me but drink for dad. Also different brands can taste different
