Hello!

Our 8 year old has just started getting some homework in grade 3 (not a huge amount, but they are starting the habit of it I guess). We thought we should try and add to that by doing a little bit extra each night (some times tables, reading and spelling). We (including daughter) all sat down to work out a schedule for the week which seemed great. But we’re finding it so hard to stick to a schedule because… well, life. Anyone have any tips for making this work other than just “stick to the plan”!

  • getting in to it straight away while things are fresh in their mind and before they get too tired. they get started while I get a snack for them.

  • even getting some things like hearing reading in the car straight after school or while prepping dinner helps.

  • Sounds like you’re doing ok. Homework isn’t a strict occurrence now, it’s just introducing it to kids. They’ll learn

  • At that ages, 30 minute per night before bed routine starts seems reasonable

  • I agree this can be really hard! What worked for us was tagging it onto other things that happened every night. Eg doing half an hour after dinner. Or twenty minutes before bathtime… And I’d add that in Year 3, every second night is probably good enough to start the habit. You might find this easier.

  • we used to do half an hour every day and it seemed to work well

  • Honestly unless your child is struggling with something at school, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, especially at such a young age. My primary school children have readers each week ( but they love reading and read every night before bed anyway) Otherwise they play their sports or do drama etc. They’re only young for such a short time I say let them be kids and not put too much pressure on them.

  • Set a schedule that has lots of time for the unknown because life happens.

  • I don’t really believe in homework, but as I didn’t have a choice…the kids would do 20 minutes on weeknights and we would catch up on Sunday’s

  • We used to do one afternoon per week we devoted to homework together around the kitchen table. And in the lower junior school years we used to write daily a piece in a journal, which was great for their literacy and grammar skills.
I was never keen on homework in the evening as the evening is for unwinding and getting ready for bed in my opinion

  • Can you commit to 1 night a week to focus on it?
Could she do parts of it herself and have you in the background to ask if needed e.g when you’re cooking dinner?
