Hello!

I am a single mum to a beautiful 8 year old boy. I suffer from severe depression. Lately I am finding that I have no control over my emotions. I cry all too easily in front of him. He said to me today that I am making him sad. This just makes me feel worse. I sometimes feel he would be better off without me. I am so scared.

  • Be proactive if you arent already – get medication, counseling, and a psychologist. Find some help – can you move in with your Mum at all?

  • Another suggestion not made here yet is that that a low dose of anti-depressants can help. Antidepressants work by balancing chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters that affect mood and emotions. These depression medicines can help improve your mood, help you sleep better, and increase your appetite and concentration.

  • I see this is an old question. How are you going now Melanie ? I hope you’ve found shoulders to lean on and the ability to seek help. You’re worth it !

  • Have you been to see your GP fir a referral to someone who treats mental health issues? Sounds like you need to get yourself there quickly

  • Speak with a good GP for a mental health plan. I’m a big cry baby so I understand two children and I suffered two. Try,walking even though it’s now winter oops. Get your son some good movies so he is entertained when your not up to things. Remember nothing stays the same I joined an art group local neighbourhood centre and picked myself up to a better place. You can to.

  • i was hoping to see more suggestions here as this topic would be relevant to a lot of mums. sometimes things just get overwhelming! anybody would be lying if they said otherwise. I hope that things are looking up for you now. i hope that you have the support that you need. try to keep positive and think of the big picture. take a moment out for yourself just to gather yourself. Have a chat to your doc because they do help! have a break! take a holiday or simply don’t answer the phone or door for a weekend. You are important! You are not alone! No matter how it feels! Some days ARE tougher than others but you can get through this. I hope that chrissie wasn’t too stressful and gave you a nice break. I can’t stand to see people in emotional pain. I lost a family member to suicide so i know that depression is real and serious and also suicide is not a solution. I am wishing you the best! Hopefully you do feel better now! Thank you for admitting that you needed some help, that was incredibly brave of you and it is not at all easy to do. Your child has a beautiful mum :) you are doing the right thing to help yourself be the best for your child’s sake.

  • Wow! That would be upsetting to hear.
Have you sought professional help from your gp and/or a therapist? That can REALLY help.
Another thing to help, is to get out more. When you feel down, just get out of the house for a bit, even just for a walk around the block… Take your son to the park or zoo or whatever you have in your area, use him as your motivation…
Also, do you have a support system? If you do, let them know what is going on, I am sure they will be wanting to help you. Invite them over for a cuppa or just pop around to their houses. I like to randomly pop into visit friends when I’m feeling quite down or overwhelmed ect… Really seems to help as I don’t feel so alone and the conversations really help to get my mind off things.
A hobby could also help as well =) Keep your mind active and will help keep you doing something to keep you busy!
I wish you the greatest of luck with it all!! I am sure you are a top mum, just going through a rough time at the moment. Good on you for reaching out and knowing you have a problem, that is usually the hardest step as it is the first!!

  • Thank you so much, Mum94125. I am seeking help. I wrote this on a really bad day. I appreciate your reply. x

  • poor gal. you need to talk to someone about what is happening and help to stop feeling guilty. you can’t help the way that you feel but you can learn to deal with it. things will get better, just talk to someone please.
