Hello!

My son has quite a build up of wax in his ears. What is the safest and most effective way to remove it?

  • Visit your doctor. You should not try to remove it yourself – you could damage his eardrum.

  • I’ve read lots of home remedies, but I would ask my GP to do it by flushing with water.

  • Take him to your gp. Anything you do at home could result in permanent ear damage, I’m sure you don’t want to risk that

  • yes waxsol is great. you can use audiclean which can be used on children from 2 years.

  • One of my boys has to use Waxsol Ear Drops from the chemist. It softens and loosens the wax and it comes out on its own. I checked with the doctor first because it was bad enough to be causing him some discomfort and hearing loss and about every 12-18 months we seem to have a repeat. My other son has had grommets to stop recurring ear infections and hearing loss and frequently falling over was a sign, strangely no pain.

  • Thanks June11. Great advice. Much appreciated. :)

  • Do not try to clean in his/her eardrum. However you can clean the outer section outside the eardrum. If the eardrum doesn’t clear itself you need to consult a Dr. He may be able to remove it with special equipment, or syringe them (they use water as far as I know) or you put ear drops in them to see if that helps. Failing that there is a possibility of grommets being used. When they have done their job they fall out on their own.

  • Hi I was always told not to clean them due to the risk of damaging the ear, if it’s a big issue I’d take him to the doctor
