Hello!

Our little dog died of a heart condition on Australia Day. We are heartbroken and miss him terribly. My question is how long should we wait before getting another puppy? We all feel that we want a dog straight away, but is it too soon? I’d be interested in the opinion of others who have faced this dilemma and would love to know how it worked out.

  • If you feel ready to move on, then I would do so.

  • Nope, it’s never too soon to get a new pup after yours has died. So many homeless dogs out there, I’m sure your deceased pet would be thrilled if you adopted another to share the love. He’s no doubt encouraging you to adopt

  • So happy to hear you have a new puppy.

  • When you feel to get a new puppy straight away, then go for it !

  • I know quite a few people who only waited a few weeks.

  • So happy that you have your new puppy. It’s always a hard decision to make after the passing of a much loved pet. My daughter is so attached to my dog, I honestly don’t know what we will do when time comes. We always had a dog growing up. I have never forgotten any of them but dad seemed to come home with a new puppy/dog pretty soon after.

  • Nothing will ever replace your dog. It’s just a matter of when you think you’ll be ready to chase after a puppy!!!

  • Happy to say we now have a new puppy. We are still missing our beloved Jesse terribly, but this new pup is definitely keeping us on our toes. Thank you to all for you lovely advice.

  • My elderly parents faced this dilemma and our family encouraged them to get a new dog straight away as it is great interest for them and they were mourning their lost dog. It has been an excellent decision and helped them to move on.

  • I think you should take a trip to the dog pound
many a dog who was wonderful I found
In memory of your dog you loved and cared for
give another dog a chance that never had before
you sound like a family who really cares
your dog will be happy your love he shares

  • I’m sorry for your loss & I understand it is hard on you all grieving for a very loved member of your family. My only advice would be if you have little ones puppies can be a bit too playful & if you are planning on holidays you have the expense of boarding kennels to consider.

  • If you are feeling able to cope with a new puppy, get one, pop down to the AWL and rehome an unwanted Christmas present, you are then doing something wonderful by getting a rescue pet that has been checked for temperament and illnesses, is desexed, vaccinated and will be fantastic therapy for your family, we love all our animals like members of our families but when children are involved the sooner a normal routine is restored the better and it allows the grieving process to move quicker. good luck with your new baby,

  • Glad the advice is helpful MEL1. Wishing you the best when you do get a new Cavalier. I do know that some purebred organisations rescue purebreds and need new homes for them; even puppies.

  • I think it depends on you. If you are ready now, go for it!

  • sounds like you all want another pup! go for it. animals bring happiness. don’t feel guilty.
im sure you have said your good byes to your dear puppy

  • Thanks to you both. You have both offered helpful advice and I will take that on board. It is still early days and we are still getting used to not have him around. I’d love to run out and buy a puppy just to”fill the gap”, but its not so easy. Breeders have long waiting lists and we really want a cavalier again, so I think we will be waiting a while.

  • So sorry for your loss. I lost my first dog (Locki) 8 years ago and still miss him terribly. In saying that my husband talked me into looking for a puppy within a couple of months and I am now so glad we did. Our new puppy joined the family about 3 months after we lost Locki

  • Firstly; so sorry for your sad loss. Losing a much loved pet/family member is very difficult. Give yourself enough time to grieve and think about a new pet. A couple of months is a good time frame as it gives you time to grieve and think about a new pet? In the meantime visit dog shelters and have some play time with other dogs. They will absolutely love this time. We did this before deciding on our new ‘family members’. The shelter were happy for us to come along and walk and play with the dogs. It allowed them time to stretch their legs. It helped to heal our broken hearts and we ended up rescuing two dogs that needed lots of TLC and they are now so loved. Sending lots of good thoughts your way and hoping you all come through your grief. x :)
