Hello!

Currently 30 weeks pregnant with my first child, a baby girl. I’m unsure what amount of newborn nappies I should buy. I know all babies are different, I just don’t want to be under prepared, or even over prepared, and be stuck with a massive collection of nappies.

  • I would get a small amount of a couple sizes, just to be safe. Once you know the right size, your partner can go pick up more :)

  • There’s no easy answer for this. My 2 kids were completely different my girl would go days without pooping but my son- I once went through 3 nappies before I could get him off the change table! Both kids were small and were in newborn size for 2mths. Nappies are easy to buy – just buy about 3 packs to get you through the first bit and then buy as you need.

  • With all three of my children I purchased two boxes of the 106 newborn nappies. After they were used I found bubs was drinking more, so urinating more and the. Newborn nappies didn’t cut it… We then moved onto infant sizes.

  • If you’re having a baby shower, wait til after that because nappies are a popular present. If you’re not, just grab a couple of boxes to start with. If you run out, it’s not hard to grab some more from the shop. Then you’re not stuck with too many

  • Great to read all the answers, thanks for the question

  • If you buy cloth, 3 dozen should do. They never grow out of these and when they’re finished with nappies, they become great cleaning rags. Such a shame that mums today are all for disposables. Try 3 or 4 boxes (depending on size of boxes) to start with. They’re not something you’ll never be able to get again, so start with a couple and stock up when you run low. Too easy

  • Not many, 2 at the most, unless your baby is tiny they will outgrow them rapidly, you are better to buy the next size up and stock up on that, the other thing I found is that many friends actually gave me newborn nappies in hampers so I ended up with way more than I could use, so even if you run out you are unlikely to need many more anyway. so buy a couple of packets and then lots of the bigger sizes, good luck with bub,

  • With all my 3 bubs I started with 2 boxes of Huggies Newborn. My 3 girls were all under 4kg though so we got through them quite fine. At least with 2 if they grow big quickly you don’t have a huge stockpile.

  • I would like to know the answer to this aswell please

  • yeah i bought two boxes and used another pack or two and then needed the next size up. they grow so fast especially if they are a good feeder

  • It honestly depends on how big your baby is at birth. I bought two boxes of Huggies nappies, and by the time we had finished them my son only needed one more bulk pack and we moved onto the next size up in nappies (We started buying Comfybots then)
Not sure what your store policies locally are for returns, but some stores let you take them back and exchange them if your baby grows out of them. Also if you are having a baby shower remember people will probably buy nappies for you for presents there and at the time of birth :)
    Good luck!

  • Thanks for asking this question, I needed to know the answer to this too :)

  • It depends on the size of bub but if you want to be prepared buy 1 bulk pack and then buy smaller packs after the bulk one is finished as bub won’t be in them long if he/she’s quite big, you can also get the 4-8kg size just in case of a big bub.

  • We started off with 2 x 108 boxes of huggies NB nappies, we did end up buying a couple more boxes but then a friend of mine didn’t quite use the full 2 so best start off with 2 and go from there!

  • we’ve used 1 mega box from costco, and 3 jumbo boxes from woollies then changed to infant.

  • I’d buy at least four boxes, keep your receipt, if you don’t use the last box you an always return it.

  • Thats a hard one, I would buy three newborn boxes and a couple of the next size up. Another idea is to buy a gift card (for the supermarket) each week so you can buy what you need instead of guessing and stressing if you will have enough money for the essentials. You can never have enough wipes (I think I had and was given about 25 packs and although I didn’t have to buy any the first year I did use them all)

  • 2 boxes

  • I went to Costco and bought a bulk box of 225 of newborn nappies and when I ran out it was time for the infant size :)

  • I only used about three boxes worth and my baby was in 0000 for 9 weeks. I found the infant size (next size up) was better anyway, especially huggies, they are a very small make and I always go up a size early in the huggies. Yes you can exchange them, but who wants the hassle? I would get at least two boxes and maybe get some infant size.
