Hello!

During the Christmas/New Year shopping I noticed that my shoulders were aching at the end of the day. So I decided to weigh my handbag to see if that was the culprit.

To my shock my bag weighs 2.8kg !!!

My bag isn’t made of leather (although my wallet is) and I do have a seperate coin purse which weighs a bit at the moment but everything else in there seems “fairly” conventional:

• small mobile phone • lipstick & small mirror inside a clear zipped pouch • makeup scarf (to prevent makeup transfer onto clothes when trying on/off clothes) • 2x glasses in their cases (prescription & sunglasses) • emergency items like paracetamol (only 2 tabs); bandaids; chewing gum & a few lollies • tiny bottle of antibacterial fluid & baby wipes
Any suggestions?

  • See if you can reduce the items in your handbag (small pack of wipes, no coins) or chose a lighter handbag

  • I had to lighten mine due to shoulder injury. What I did was to actually buy a lighter weight handbag and change heavy items for lighter one eg switch glasses cases, not carry water bottles etc. it’s makes a big difference

  • You don’t have much in your bag, i’m surprised it does weigh that much. Mine seems so heavy some days then I go and find a dinosaur or hot wheels for my son haha. One thing I have been seeing it the idea of downsizing your wallet by using an app for any store cards etc that way the main things in your wallet would be licence and credit card.

  • Love reading some of these solutions as I’m having the same issue. I’ve reduced the size of my bag and all, to no avail. Everything in it is necessary

  • There is not thst much in your bag. What is the weight of just a bag?

Also its nice that you are protecting clothes during trying them on…i never thought about it

  • I would suggest that you remove the coin purse, make up scarf and lipstick/mirror. Also maybe look for a smaller bag and wallet. Alternatively you could replace your bag with a back pack type handbag which would take the weight off one shoulder.

  • Go cashless as coins weigh a ton

Clean out your bag every day after you come home

  • I’d remove the scarf and the glasses.

  • I think this is a common problem that most of us woman face, and it isn’t easy to cull items when most of them are basic necessities! The two most obvious things are 1. Coins, tip them out of your purse every day and, 2. use a cross over bag which will evenly distribute the weight without it bearing all on one shoulder.

  • make sure your glasses cases are only the size they need to be as some ar very big and bulky and heavier and with only small glasses inside

  • Ditch the coins! I leave my sunnies in the car when possible or carry 1 case and switch frames in them

  • Try going out for shirt trips with jst phone, keys and glasses. You might be surprised how rarely you need nothing ese.

  • Also; only pack what is necessary in a bag. If an item is not used, I get rid of it!

  • I know right ? And when you then add a water bottle and a wee snack for the kids to your handbag it’s even more heavy !

  • I always know when I have got too many coins in my bag. Try and empty out the coins into a money box or keep them to a minimum. Also as a person that wears glasses, some of the cases are pretty heavy and chunky so look for light weight cases if possible. Lastly I use a cross body bag to even the weight on my body.

  • If you use cash you will find the coins are very heavy. I have a kids’ heavy porcelain money box I put surplus 5 and 10 pieces in. The shape of it you really can’t tell it’s a money box unless you removed from a high shelf in the china cabinet to see the opening in it.

  • My bags heavy too. But I also just have my phone with some card holders and i bing that i stead of mg bag most days and put the bag in my boot

  • I always carry too much in my bag and then hubby asks ‘do you have enough room for these?’ as he hands me his wallet and keys. Holiday time is worse – I’m like a pack horse with the amount of stuff I carry around. One thing I do though is to remove most of my coins, which weigh a ton, and leave them at home in a cup.

  • I know my bag was getting too heavy when my car kept telling me my passenger needed a seat-belt! Its not ergonomically safe or really even that convenient (here, let me just empty out my bag looking for that one little item..usually said at a checkout or front of some long line) I now use a hip bag, its like a bum-bag but sits on the hip and I’d like to think its a little more fashionable! It holds my essentials including phone, keys and cards etc. I can only suggest you possibly look at getting a bag with a longer strap so you can wear your bag across your body, taking the weight evenly rather than loading it onto one shoulder!

  • Take out the coins they always weigh a bag down. Put them in a jar at home. Then if need be just take $3 if you need milk etc that way there not in your bag for too long and the lollies also.
