Is it illegal to leave a dog in the car on a cold day for 5 minutes?

  • I’m not sure. You may need to seek legal advice about it.

  • I would check before doing it.

  • If the windows are down so air getting in the car that is ok on cold day.

  • I know it’s illegal to leave a dog in your car in summer, for the simple fact they cam die and quickly! In winter though, I don’t see the same issue. I wouldn’t recommend leaving a dog in your car for any length of time by itself full stop!

  • I’m not sure if it’s legal or not.

  • On a cold day with the window a bit open shouldn’t be a problem,l see it all the time but on a hot day -NO!

  • not sure about the legalities but it is definetly discouraged to ever leave an animal (or a child) in a car no matter the weather.

  • I am honestly not sure & it is a good question!
Perhaps ask your local police station or council?
Each state has different laws so best to play it safe & ask local.

  • I think it’s fine, as long as it’s not too long and odiously as you said not hot!?

  • I would think not, but there are different laws in each state. The thing with the ‘only 5 minutes’ thing is that it often goes for longer. Best not to risk it if you ask me and summer is worse

  • Oh I don’t know….If its hot you can’t. It’s a good question

  • i have seen heaps of people do this but i don’t know. maybe check out council/police rules or websites

  • Check the rules with your local authorities; I am aware of people being fined for leaving animals in cars and paying for the damage to vehicles; someone breaking the window.

  • I would say so

  • I doubt it… hopefully our police have more important things to worry about then fining people for leaving pets in the car for a short time!

  • In response to mum CHRISTIE_MILLER just wondering where does it mention that it’s illegal on your Council’s website for responsible dog ownership or the brochure they put out, I can’t even see it on the Victorian Pet Education Site. Sorry to be a pain but I would be interested to read this as I have relatives / friends in Cranbourne and this is the first they’ve heard of it.

  • I doubt that it would be illegal, especially for 5 minutes. But it could be lethal for the dog if you did it in hot weather. And you could find the window of your car broken, if someone took it upon themselves to break the window to free the dog. You may find this link to a forum on dogs useful …

  • No, it not good

  • Here in Cranbourne, Melbourne.
It’s illegal to leave them in a car no matter how hot/cold it is.. It doesn’t matter if it’s 40 mins or 5 mins

  • Of course it’s not illegal. Have you ever seen utes and trucks flying around the roads with dogs hanging out the back of them in all sorts of weather? If it was illegal, you wouldn’t see them.

However, some common sense prevails here, would you feel comfortable leaving your dog in the car on a cold day?

Our dog sleeps inside the house in winter with a blanket wrapped around him and it’s not even cold.
