Hello!

Does anyone else feel we should be warned before being shown images of gangrene limbs, blood clots etc in anti-smoking ads?

  • They make them extra graphic as scare tactic and it’s the question if this is uberhaupt effective

  • The ads should be on at a later time for adults not so much for small children.

  • YES – I am so over these tacky horrible images, and unfortunately we have to explain them to our kids!

  • They’re pretty graphic aren’t they? I don’t know if giving a warning would do much about it – most people look away from those ads now and if you had a warning they were coming, you’d probably not see them at all from switching the channel or not watching the TV. I guess they’re trying hard to make an impression about quitting smoking although I don’t know how successful shock tactics are really.

  • If they are shown during adult hours I can’t see a problem … better to be shocked by the ad than be shocked to death by receiving news you have cancer from smoking.

  • I think the warning are appropriate. But they should be shown in later time slots

  • they are horrible but unfortunatly that is the reality. i don’t think kids should be exposed to it and i will educate them about it when it is appropriate but i don’t want to see a gnarly foot while i am trying to eat dinner with the family lol. (yes i hear you all saying, turn the tv off)

  • No not really. The images are there to try to deter people from smoking, If there was a warning then would you cover your or your kids eyes before it? My kids are 4 and 9. I quit smoking about a year ago and I’m glad my kids see the images because it will deter them more from smoking wehen they’re older. We can’t shelter them from what could happen.

  • No it just reminds us that being non smokers we don’t have to worry about it, plus it shows our kids what smoking can do to one’s self.

  • Not really, it’s part of the world today and if your children ask you can explain to them early the consequences of smoking and they may not do it when they are older

  • I’ve kind of stopped noticing them. I think the money should be better spent in reducing the cost of quit smoking aids rather than concentrating on marketing.

  • AS long as these adds are only shown during shows for adults that kids should not be wathcing at all i do not have a issue with them, but i would have a HUGE issue if it ws shown during kids programing.

  • I think warning would take away some of the impact of these ads… they are meant to shock!

  • I have not seen these ads on TV for quite a while. Are they on later in the evening? I know many teens that will never ever smoke because of these ads! They wonder why anyone would smoke? I explained that the images used to be of glamour and being ‘cool’. Ads do work and campaigns do work and for the benefit of the community and the strain on the medical system we really do need the ads/campaigns to work.

  • Not really – these are real and the ads really work.

  • It really is disgusting isn’t it and I think small children could have nightmares watching these commercials. Perhaps complain to the cancer council or channel who shows them if you are concerned . I know my dad who only stopped because he had to was not one bit affected by it . So I think for smokers , it wouldn’t matter to them because they will do it anyway , and it is only those that cares will really watch the whole commercial .

  • I agree that smoking is a terrible addiction with horrific consequences, but as a non-smoker I object to disturbing images being flashed up in tv ads without warning. When a news story has disturbing images we are given a warning, and the same should be done for tv ads.

  • I agree with the warnings as smoking is a hideous disease and I have seen people die of smoking related diseases and it is horrific way to die. The results of smoking on the body are awful and the glamour does need to be taken away from smoking.
