Hello!

I was out shopping for a set of knives with a friend the other day and we saw a block set that sits on the counter. I said I wouldn’t consider them in case someone broke in, and she said I was weird and that thought had never crossed her mind. Am I weird for not wanting to leave knives out in plain sight?

  • I wouldn’t consider this an issue. A lot of things could be used as a weapon. Do you hide all the candelabras, golf clubs, weights?

  • Not something that I would ever worry about to be honest

  • I keep mine in both! The good set in a drawer and the others which used to be in one of those standing men knife holders (which broke) are now in a utensil holder.

  • Our knives are in a block of wood on the kitchen bench.

  • I agree that you really don’t have to worry about an intruder grabbing one of your knives to use against you. How are you storing your knives?
I use a magnetic bar, which keeps my knives safe and sharp. If you’re storing them in a drawer they’ll blunt easily. You should consider the magnetic strip, a sharp knife saves you time prepping for dinner and is much safer to cut with.

  • My family has a knife block. Some people use drawers. We use a magnetic strip in our house to keep the knives easy to access and safe from getting blunt.

I do have one friend who hates the knives being it but I think a kitchen needs to be functional and knives need to be looked after. So if you do out then in drawers, make sure they are ready to get out when you need it and havev their own space where they aren’t clanking about and getting chipped or blunt.

  • I’ve never even thought of that. We’ve always had knives in a block on the counter but lately I’ve been thinking of getting rid of it because it’s just one more thing cluttering my bench not that someone could stab me with my own knives

  • My knife block sits on my kitchen bench but it’s not in plain sight, behind my bread maker. You sound a bit paranoid. If someone broke in, they’d probably already have a weapon of some kind

  • I have always had mine in a block on the counter. Mum had hers on the counter. Everyone I know does too. I wouldn’t think any of us have ever considered that someone might break in and stab us. I think less TV for you.

  • We’ve always had them in a knife block on the counter.

  • If I ever start thinking ‘break in’ then I always think of them to my advantage, something I could use if I had to (even down to the decoy knife where the blade doesn’t actually stay in unless you’re very lucky! which of course the intruder would go for instantly because it’s the biggest).. in fact the block itself is something I could throw .. seriously anything can be turned into a weapon.. even the tea-towel to strangle someone? .. so wouldn’t be too worried where you store what… so long as it works for you (in the kitchen and in self-defence!) ….but if I was concerned about bad neighbourhood etc. would do some self-defence videos or classes.

  • I never even thought of that! However a burglar would probably bring their own anyway. Out on the bench it’s also in easy reach for you though.

  • I have mine on the countertop as my 3 year old kept touching them when they were in the drawer. I figure if someone was to break in they would bring their own

  • My mum says the same thing to me to not leave my knife block on the counter but i always have. We have a big dog so I’m not too worried.

  • Mine are in a knife block but if it bothers you then you probably should have them away.

  • everyone has their own comfort level with different things.

  • I keep mine in the drawer as I don’t have much bench space anyway and they don’t get dirty or dusty from cooking debris.

  • It’s really personal preference.. I have my in a chopping block. I do like the magnetic strip some hang on though.

  • No, not weird. It is, after all, just a matter of personal choice. I prefer to keep mine out of sight and out of reach to anyone except myself!

  • I put all mine in a draw when I started having children and they have just stayed there. The block is just another thing that requires cleaning.
