Hello!

I got my period on June 14th and it lasted until the 18th. My husband and I had unprotected sex on the 20th. I had my Kyleena IUD taken out this morning (24th) so we can start trying for a baby within the year but have been reading articles online saying that sperm can last up to 5 days. My cycle is still a little irregular since I stopped breastfeeding my daughter about six months ago so I’m not 100% sure when I am supposed to be ovulating. What are the chances of getting pregnant from intercourse 4 days before before my IUD was taken out?

  • I would say you are at risk of falling pregnant. Its a tricky business, so its not definite, but it is possible

  • Breastfeeding doesn’t always prevent pregnancy.
It is pretty rare that an IUD can move out of position and you get pregnant anyway. A relative of mine has a daughter as a result of that happening. Imagine the shock they got when they found out she was pregnant

  • There’s always a possibility but i feel it would be low.

  • I don’t think is very likely to be honest. The 5 days is the maximum but chances are low (doesn’t mean is not possible at all)

  • It’s possible, but not very likely, I think.

  • Honestly depends on your body, some ladies become extra fertile after coming off of contraception. Also remember the 2% who get pregnant on contraception and condoms due to human error are only around 95-98% effective only way to be sure no pregnancy no sex

  • I don’t think so.When IUD removed, the body doesn’t begin to produce the hormone again right away.

  • Yes it is possible. Time will tell :)

  • I’d say that it would be very unlikely. You are only on day 6 when you had intercourse, then add the 5 days that the sperm could survive. That would take you to day 11. If you have a 28 day cycle then you would ovulate on about day 14. Which would rule out pregnancy. If your cycle is shorter, ie; 24 days then you could have ovulated on day 10 or 11 which therefore makes that possible…..but the IUD that you are on affects your hormone levels which don’t wear off instantaneously. Add to the fact that you only gave birth 6 month ago, you were breastfeeding and your periods are still out of sync -. I’d say it is very unlikely. The best thing to do would be to see your gp and get some clear advice. Good luck :)

  • Wow that is a tricky one, perhaps a question for the doctors or time will tell…unless your IUD was coming to its end of life?
