Hello!

I been breastfeeding my son for 18 months and my periods have become more lighter and longer
Last 8-9 days

I was wondering has anyone experienced this before that their periods changed during breastfeeding?

  • I was breastfeeding my first daughter, when she was 6 months I got my period for the first time and had it for 7 days instead of the 5 days I used to have. My cycle was every 45 days also which was pretty great also, then I fell pregnant when my daughter was 12 months old all while stull breastfeeding.

  • I would definitely mention this to your doctor if it continues. It sounds normal but good idea to get it check out just in case.

  • I think that’s normal, my periods completely stopped every time i was breastfeeding.

  • I think that is normal with breastfeeding but next time you visit a GP you could ask.

  • With my experience Breastfeeding and periods tend to be individual. When you next see your Mother Craft Nurse or online with her mention this to her. She will have a world of experience with this issue.

  • Yes it’s normal for your periods to fluctuate with regularlity and duration during breastfeeding or post partum. After you stop, they will take a while to settle down again too

  • Yep. When bub is first born, breast feeding is why it takes so long to have periods again

  • Lots of hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding. At 18 months Bub wouldn’t be having as much milk to make the hormone to suppress your period. Periods can be irregular for awhile however it can also be caused by other underlying conditions so might be worth a visit to the GP if it continues especially if a lot more painful or with clots.

  • No sorry. If it is worrying you I would suggest seeing your GP

  • It might have to do with the fact your toddler eats more solids and drinks less breast milk less frequently

  • I didn’t have that issue. Maybe talk to your gp

  • No, for me mine just stopped for a while (or continued being stopped, if you prefer) and then came back pretty much normal.

  • I had changes but different to your experience. I consulted with my GP and got advice which helped and relieved my concerns too.
