Hello!

I am currently pregnant with my second child and am considering using modern cloth nappies. Any suggestions on which brand to use? And any pros and cons compared to disposables? Thanks for your help!

  • Cloth requires a bigger upfront investment but can be cheaper in the long run. I chose cloth for environmental reasons. Disposables take between 200 to 500 years to decompose…every nappy ever used is still out there. Personally I did not want to contribute to that. Also, cloth is just so cute!

  • I used cloth nappies. Disposables are most definitely easier, not so good on the environment and are pretty affordable these days. I only used disposables when we were out and about. If I were to have a baby now, I think I would choose disposable

  • I use modern cloth nappies most of the time, and use disposable for some nights and when on long outings. Cloth saves heaps of money, and there are some beautiful patterns and pictures out there. The ones I have are resizeable, so they’ve been used from newborn through to 2 1/2 years, and still more room to go. A few of mine are not as waterproof as they were, but I’ve marked them and use them exclusively for daytime. Mine were around $6-$10 each, although my sister in law has paid much more for ones embroidered with Lion King and Dinosaurs and all sorts of fancy things – she doesn’t use shorts when he’s wearing the fancy ones.

  • The absorbant section of the modern nappies dry a lot faster than the other part so you will need a lot more of them. The stains are hard to get off. My niece used them for awhile, found they leaked out the sides and swapped to disposable ones. They are not cheap but they may be better in the cold wet weather. I depends whether or not your baby gets nappy rash. Our latest addition gets it worse with some brands than others. We found the best product for him is Sudocrem. You can buy it in two different size plastic containers or in tubes. We initially bought it in a Pharmacy, but you can buy it in some supermarkets cheaper -same containers.

  • i used a mix finding disposables convenient when we went out for long periods and for overnight

  • I used cloth for my son for the first couple of months back 19 years ago and it is so much extra work. I had a sample of brought nappies and tried it and never looked back. My second child wore only brought nappies. they are good if you like more washing.

  • I just use disposables. Tried with the cloth one and just didn’t have time to wash and dry asking with everything else that needed washing!

  • I used cloth nappies for my first child but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th I used disposables as I think you just don’t get the time to wash and dry them the more children you have and just ease of a disposal nappy is easier.

  • I forgot to say I use the Pocket ones, less hassle.

  • I use mainly disposables now but I did use my modern cloth nappies for ages. They save heaps of money and are just as easy as disposables. Do your homework, I got mine for about $6 each from china and they are great. I think they are called Sunbaby. My ‘baby’ is now 24 months and I still use the same ones on him because the size is adjustable. They are good when the budget is tight. Have saved me heaps. I’ll get some more when I have another baby.

  • there are some good comments here

  • i like the coles brand nappies and i like how you can just get rid of them without dealing with the poo and wee and when out and about, keeping the cloth ones would just be messy

  • I found Huggies my son leak, Baby love was good, Aldi is great, it’s cheap. The only suggestion is that I was told not to use them as newborn. I didn’t really want to the whole cloth thing.

  • We use cloth, we have a mixture of prefolds (cotton and terry towelling) as well as pocket nappies. I like the Bumgenius flip nappy covers with my prefolds and i use pixie poppits for pocket nappies. We also have some cheaper ebay ones that i use daily as well, they are the rainbow BB brand. We wash them every two days and do not soak them. I wash them in purity washing liquid or with soap nuts.

  • We found huggies best, as our son got older cloth nappies didn’ t do the trick, he needed heavier absorbancy.

  • I use mcn. He’s my first and I got a heap of newborn disposables that I used to begin with (till about 8 weeks) then moved into mcn. I got the Itti Bitti newborn ones to begin with cause I thought the all in ones would be too big. I had 12 newborns (half all in one and half snap in one) and also 3 bambooty all in ones (these seem thinner than the OSFM). When he grew out of these I used the OSFM from Itti bitti and the bambooties. I used the inserts out of the snap in one newborns to pad out for the nights in the OSFM. In total I had 15 and washed every second night. You do tend to go through more clothes due to occasional leaking but I would already be doing one load with the nappies so I just add the clothes with the nappies. I have recently bought the Itti bitti ones and twos which seem easier when some one else is looking after my boy. I now have about 20 nappies, wash every 3-4 days as he is 10 months and not needing to change as much. I’m looking forward to using them again for my next bub.

  • Have both on hand and see how you handle it. I started with cloth old style nappies with my first. By the time my second one came around my schedule was more frantic so it was disposable. Good luck on the journey of babyhood.

  • most of the larger mcn companies attend expos where you can view the products and find out more about them too. that is how I excluded some brands from my list and had others on the top. they also do great specials at expos. I brought my pea pods (with inserts) at 10 for $180 plus I got a free one and 2 extra night time inserts.

  • I use mcns. I have pea pods, bubeez, absolute baby and bubba blue. I like all mine. I have different brands as I try to buy when on special. I have used mine with my 3 children aged now 3, 2 & 1 and they are all still in excellent condition. having a mcn which is fully adjustable from birth to toilet training is a must. have extra liners for bedtime or times when they may be heavier wetters. you will save save save money, well I have considering I had 3 in nappies at one stage. I think they are more comfortable for them compared to disposable. my kids have never had nappy rash problems etc. they are very easy to wash and keep clean also.

  • Disposables are easy and cheap, modern nappies are great too but you have to work out the cost for both as disposables nappies cost between 18-42 cents a nappy and cloth nappies you have to buy and then cost for washing, electricity, water, drying them in winter etc.
