Hello!

Hi Ladies, I’ve recently had baby number 3 and after my first appointment with the physio at 8 weeks postpartum, my tummy muscles are 4 and a half fingers apart. I’m not allowed to return to work, I’m not allowed to do yoga, I have to work on bringing the muscles back together but the exercises don’t seem to be working and Im really worried. has anyone or is anyone going through similar ?

  • I had really bad separation as well. I used a support band for a long time and saw a physio who gave me exercises that helped. Steer clear of any sort of sit up as that will make it worse. Even now I still have a 2 finger width separation but it doesnt cause me any problems.

  • Yes, I’ve had this and needed to do exercises and also wear a band compression which you should have gotten from your physio. It does take times and does really work.

  • No where near as bad as yours, but it takes time. Try doing sit ups and build endurance. Your body will ease back over time

  • This takes a long time, and for some people, never happens without surgery. I still have a 2 finger gap, and my youngest is 8. You can function okay.

  • It’s still early, try what has been suggested and the only other one I know is it’s really easy to just revert to using your tummy muscles when you get up so try something that will trigger reminding you and get your partner and other people around to help you remember too.

  • Yes! I was recommended support pants or a belly band and pelvic floor exercises and walking

  • I’m four months out from giving birth but unfortunately haven’t had the chance to go and see a doctor for myself. I’ve taken my baby for both of his shots but everytime I go to the doctor the wait is hours long and by the time I get seen the doctor I want to see has to go home.
Thank you for reminding me at I’ll need to get my separation checked as well so will come back to you on this one as I’ll ask for advice on other sorts of exercises.

  • Have you tried the tummy control shaping underwear or a belly bend? My muscle separation isn’t that severe but my midwife recommended something like that to help.

  • After my second, mine was separated for quite a while but I was also severely overweight at the time. I’m 7 years on now and I still get pains when i do certain core/ab things but it’s generally closed up. The Dr at the time only advised me not to get pregnant again while it’s open, or get it surgically closed. Sorry to hear you’ve been limited to what you can do! Have a look for support groups, especially on facebook – They might have similar experiences.

  • Sorry can’t help you. Did you look for support group on Facebook?
