Hello!

Hi today my 3 year old son had a ultrasound and we found out he has a hernia. I have a appointment with his Dr in 2 days to discuss it. Has anyone else’s child suffered from a hernia at a young age? I’m still so shocked that my son has one. They said its not serious but he will need a operation to fix it. Thanks.

  • It is more common than you realise and usually can be easily fixed. The main thing is to find out from your Dr what type of hernia it is, where it is located and follow treatment plans.

  • Not to sure but I hope other mums can help you with your question.

  • Poor him and poor you. it must be very stressful. I really hope you manage to get it sorted soon.

  • I had one when I was 4yo on my belly button or near it or something. Had it operated on and now at 39 I have never ever had a recurring issue .

  • I had a hernia but mine was really bad and painful but I’m an adult not sure for a child but I had surgery just watch him and see what doctors say hope he is alright.

  • From what I know it’s not uncommon for little people to experience a hernia, surgery has also advanced quite a lot recently so hopefully it is a quick and simple operation!

  • My son had hernia when he was twelve. He had an operation and has been OK since. My father being a carpenter had hernia quite a few times and he just had an operation and it was all fixed. As long as the operation is done your little boy should be fine.

  • :( no advise but I hope everything is ok!

  • I would check all the risks involved before considering the surgery as he is very young but it is not uncommon for babies to even be born with a hernia

  • I know it must be a worry for you, but now that your son’s seen the doctor, you know what is wrong & how they will fix it. For your own peace of mind, do keep an eye on the hernia area, and if you notice any changes, or your son seems to be in discomfort, don’t hesitate to take him back to the doctor. Good luck!

  • Thanks so much. He has gone to royal children’s hospital and seen a specialist. He is now on a waiting list for surgery..unless things get worse it can take up to 2 months. I am sure everything will be ok:)

  • Sorry can’t help with childhood hernia’s, I have had an incision hernia form having my gall bladder out (repaired a few times) so I am sending your son all my wishes for a speedy recovery and love little one, hoping your in tip top health soon.

  • Oh poor little boy I hope everything goes alright take care

  • Any type of hernia is a worry

  • Thanks I’m sure it will be ok:) he has a appointment with specialist later this week.

  • I’m assuming you’re refering to a inguinal hernia eg groin & not umbilical?Luckily my boys haven’t had one. (More common in boys).Yes it will need to be repaired otherwise you have the risk for stangulation of the bowel. Wishing you all the best for the impending surgery.

  • I’ve had a few friends with kids both boys and girls born with them. It’s actually more common than you realise
