Hello!

My poor 1 year old baby boy has croup. I took him to the hospital and after being monitored and examined he was discharged and given 2 doses of steroids. My question is what can I do for him to make him more comfortable? Any natural remedies to help him through this rough time? Thanx in advance

  • *Warm compress on chest
*Humidifier/vaporizer in room (cool air style recommended, sometimes two in one room)
*Popsicles to cool the throat directly (here are some homemade popsicles with zero sugar)
*Children’s Ibuprofen to reduce swelling at night, not natural but probably preferable to steroid treatment or a hospital stay
*Cinnamon, thyme, and clove essentials oils in a steam tent,
*Elderberry syrup is said to be really good for both general immunity boosting and upper respiratory support.
*Lobelia extract is supposedly the number one herb for asthma and breathing issues and mullein is also good as a tea or to breathe the steam.
    * TriLight Health’s Lungs Plus includes many helpful herbs and has been a helpful tool according to some.
*Keep the child calm; crying increases the coughing. If you have a regular natural remedy for calm, including homeopathics or even just sitting on the couch watching TV to distract the child, try it!
*One method is to use an extra pillow to slightly prop the child up and instruct them to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth slowly. “Apparently, this helps ease the spasms that keep the cough going…”
*Water, chamomile tea, honey and lemon juice would all be helpful, too. (Some kids drink a lot more tea if there’s a bendy straw involved, apparently…)
Elderberry to help dry up the congestion.
*Sleeping with a window cracked a bit (when it’s cold outside).
*Similisan makes a homeopathic cough syrup that is awesome for croup!
*Kali Mur, the homeopathic remedy can stopped the croup.

  • Vaporiser is grey, always bathroom, hot water running breatH in the steam, Vicks, keep something in his feet always and keep him rugged up warm. :( unfortunatly it will happen no matter what if it’s going to happen, croup was a common occurrence of at least once a year for me if not more up until the age of 13!! :( then again when I was pregnant with my second baby last year at the age of 22! Croup really sucks!

  • there are some good comments here

  • oh no i hope his all good now

  • My sister was hospitalised when a baby with a severe case of croup. Goats milk was recommended by the doctors for my sister so my parents bought our own goat as goat’s milik wasn’t available in the shops then. Mum and Dad said it made a big difference to my sister’s health as the attacks were less severe. Also avoid any dust or smoke irritants.

  • There are some essential oils that would help but I think that following a doctor’s advice is best as natural remedies can sometime cause allergic reaction.

  • Hope you found some helpful advice below.

  • how did you go? :)

  • Some really good advice, hope some have been helpful.

  • A paramedic told me the same thing about cold night air helping – said that was common thing he did ‘down south’ (of Bris). Croup is awful!

  • bananas are a natural steroid and work well to help boost their immune system,a dn they taste good and are good for them!

  • Bec Woodhouse

  • elevate his cot mattress with a pillow underneath and use a humidifier/vaporiser overnight.

  • after reading these comments I have now learnt something new to help my kids Thanks!

  • Mix 1tbs brown vinegar with 1tbs water & 1 tbs methylated spirits. Pour mixture on a sanitary pad the wrap pad in a hand towel. Put it on pillow or near little one’s head. Works a treat, although it sounds strange.

  • My Dr had my little one on steroids for about 2 days and he was better half way through the first day after the second dose.
If you have a humidifier putting it on cool is great – breathing in cool air is the best thing for them as it opens up their airways.
Ibuprofen for the inflammation and pain and keep him sitting up as much as possible.
If you have access to breastmilk give him some in a cup – it will boost his immune system and help him to fight it off.
If they aren’t better take them to your GP and get a prescription for the steroids if it’s bad he might need a few doses over a couple of days.
