Hello!

I am wondering if you could give your opinion on whether you like to drink coffee while you are shopping or whether this practice is not your cup of tea (or maybe a bugbear of yours).

I will start and please don’t let me offend anyone or sway your vote in any way but I am 100% against this trend. I have seen many an accident resulting in this, from a lady drinking her coffee whilst bending down to pick up a grocery item (thus tipping her coffee onto the floor…potential for a slip trip) to people bumping into you whilst carrying coffee. I am only waiting for a child to get burnt (pray this does not happen).

I know many cafe’s put lids on coffee but alas not all and there is still the possibility of being bumped whilst people madly hurry and scurry. Now my local Woolworths have put in a cafe selling hot beverages in their supermarket next to the bakery. Really are people that time poor that they can not sit down and enjoy a few minutes of peace to enjoy their coffee or can they not wait to get home and have one then. Just wondering what your view on this subject is. Thanks.

  • If I go shopping I often have kids with me so it’s not practical. I’ve nothing against people who do so long as they’re responsible

  • I’ma yay. As long as people are paying attention. Ive not seen too many accidents – probably the same amount of accidents that there are with water

  • Personally I like to sit down as having your hands occupied with a cup whilst shopping isn’t so practical. I’m fine with whatever other people choose. Woolworths has a cup holder in their trolleys, which is handy.

  • when i go shopping for groceries i have two kids with me and would never go with a hot drink. im there to do my shopping if i want a coffe i do it after

  • I would save the coffee for when I’m home and unpacked, so I can sit, relax and enjoy. To be honest, I haven’t ever seen anyone drinking a hot drink while grocery shopping

  • I would prefer to sit down with my coffee but sometimes if you are time short you need to drink as you go!

  • When I had no kids I would if I was walking around the city but since having kids I do t seem to have a free hand to even hold my purse let alone a cup of coffee and besides that it’s dangerous with little ones too.

  • I know a local Bunnings have a cafeteria inside the store , so obviously it is not too much of a concern for the company . I think if we take care and use a bit of common sense , you can do anything you like without hurting others, but accidents do happen . Technically you shouldn’t , but someone will always challenge the rules .

  • I agree 100% Hot drinks are best drunk when peacefully settled on a chair where it is not a burns risk or spill hazard.

  • I have never really thought about it until now, but I think drinking a hot coffee while shopping is silly. You are meant to be shopping so do that, I would either sit down afterwards or beforehand or even at home and have one then,

  • Also; I have noted that some trolleys have drink holders for drinks; maybe this a good way to avoid possible spills and accidents?

  • It does not bother me; if people like to drink coffee; then go ahead. Water can be spilled as easily as coffee. I find stray grapes on the floor a hazard; have squished and slipped on a few of them! ;)

  • Personally I like to sit in a café and enjoy the ambience and pretend it is pre children days when I did not have a care in the world and did not have to clock watch and chase my tail all day, but really these days the only way I get to enjoy a cup of decent coffee and get the shopping done is to drink It on the go, obviously people need to take care and if they do spill, get help which is not hard in most shopping centres now and clean it up to avoid tripping hazards.

  • Thanks for your comments moms, some for, some against. interesting.

  • Funny you should ask I was thinking of suggesting a coffee machine to Safeway with holders on the trolleys c’mon they have everything else in this day and she if it feels right of it.

  • I would prefer to drink at a coffee shop before doing my shopping

  • I don’t mind walking around with a cup of coffee in my hand but as with all things, it comes down to common sense and being aware of your surroundings. If you’re too stupid to realise that bending over with a drink in your hand is going to spill it then you probably shouldn’t be allowed out in public. Not to be offensive, but seriously.

  • I will happily drink a can of drink while I am shopping because if I am alone it’s the only time I will get to have something but with a hot drink I don’t agree it’s too easy to drop and if it’s hot you could hurt someone. I notice that some woolies have cafe’s set up outside the shops now and the trolleys even have a cup holder….

  • well to start off I drink tea, secondly I prefer to buy a coke zero as I refuse to pay for a cuppa when I can make one at home and they charge high prices these days. I think all should be sold ONLY with lids on.

  • I am finding all your posts interesting mums, thanks for your time. :-)
