I had a water birth with my second baby. It did seem to help a lot with making me feel more comfortable during transition, and I think it made it more peaceful for my son, who took a couple of minutes apparently to notice he’d been born (he didn’t cry at first, though he was breathing fine, I think he was just nice and warm). Cons- well, the water does look a bit gross afterwards, since it gets some blood and poo in it. You need to be careful when getting out- have someone help you because it’s hard to get out of a slippery bath when you’re a bit wobbly after giving birth.
I have had 2 of my children using water 2 “dry” births. I only have pros to water births. One was via shower and one in a birth pool. Highly effective with pain relief and also some what of a distraction from the surging contractions. I was able to focus more on each contraction and relax between.
I didn’t tear anywhere near as bad – in fact my birth in the birth pool only resulted in a minor tear that healed nicely on its own.
Although I wasn’t supposed to have a water birth for my second son, it ended up that way. I found water amazing through both births and I had natural births with no pain relieve so I believe the water enabled me to cope
I was not able to give birth in the water and had an emergency section instead.
My friend had 3 water births with positive experience, more natural and less painful.
