  • I have enjoyed reading the responses.

  • My 5 year old get $2 a week and 9 year old $5 a week, we bank half and keep half to spend. Their jobs include making bed, keeping room clean, feeding and helping clean up after animals, cutting their clothes away, setting the table and brining the rubbish bins in.

  • When they are small rewards don’t necessarily have to be money in their hands. It could be a special toy, outing or other treat. Some won’t do their chores even for pocket money and one I know doesn’t care that she isn’t getting pocket money. I know one Mum who put the money aside ready to buy school shoes as needed and also High School Uniforms. Primary School Uniforms weren’t compulsory. Some parents put their children in uniform as it meant less other clothes had to be bought. Also some children can be “bullies” and tease children who don’t have the up to date fashion expensive brand clothes one. The same applied to shoes. School jumpers are unisex so there is no issue when it is used by the next child. Two of us outgrew school jumpers and they are given to a family with younger children at the same school.

  • depends really. we have a rewards chart but usually buy them a treat and do give them pocket money to save.

  • We don’t give pocket money yet as our kids don’t really understand it yet but if my prep child dies his bed, cleans room etc he gets a couple of dollars for canteen. When we do start in thinking about gold coin each week.

  • I don’t give my daughter pocket money. She helps out around the house, so every now and again when I have some gold coins in my purse, I’ll put them in her money box.

  • Start in primary school and chores can start from 20 cents to 50 cents and increase as they get older. Use a star chart and get the kids to add a star to each chore: e.g. clothes in laundry hamper * set table * empty school bag *. Also sit with the kids and get them to add up the stars/money. You determine how much each chore is worth on the chart. Set a payday -we like Sunday.

  • I’d like to know it too! When my daughter was around 10 we gave her one dollar a week. But she didn’t care much anyway so after a while I stopped. She’s now 13, and no pocket money! :-)
