Hello!

I am about to go back into the workforce full time, and wonder what other mums do to ensure their children’s lunchboxes stay healthy when there is less time for preparation.

  • It kinda depends if you want to stick to a strict budget (usually means more prepping) or convenience. You can get single serve tubs of yoghurt, veggie sticks, cheese, fruit, bread or wraps and fillings.

  • I have lots of fresh fruit and veg on hand. You can make some sandwiches up and freeze with no issue. You could also opt to spend one day a month baking and freezing goods. Some mums do it, I was never one of them

  • Chhese on bread with chicken

  • Our childs school is nude food.
This means they are not to bring packaging, i found the sistema range of lunchboxes amazing for this, but also gets me to think of healthier options!
I always have fruit on hand, manadarines, strawberries, cucumber, apples, cheese with soft biscuits, sandwiches are usually ham/jam or vegemite, they always get a little hand full of shapes, or something unhealthy to balance it out, and we always put yoghurt into a seperate container, i find steering away from packages makes packing the lunches easier and quicker, prepare the night before, and have it in the fridge ready to grab the next morning.
I do find my children will get sick of some things so we tend to change around a bit do its not always the same! ????

  • vegetarian sausage rolls, meatballs and scrolls are all easy things that can be made when you have time maybe on a weekend and then frozen and ready to grab o the day needed. They thaw easily and can be eaten either warm or cold.

  • You fill your weekend with home baking! Muffins, quiches, mini pizzas, soups etc. Some even make sandwiches and freeze them. You do need to select fillings that are freezer friendly though

  • Think freezer friendly! Mini quiches, Muffins etc. Even sandwiches can be made in advance. I try to have a good supply of snacks int he freezer made up so then i can chuck them in and not worry about so much packaged stuff as i know exactly what is in them!

  • dried fruit, cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, olives, cheese. dried cereal.

  • With fresh fruit , sultanas and prepare sandwiches at the weekend and freeze. Maybe the kids would like to help with the preparation.

  • This is always a good question. My kids change their minds all the time about what they want to eat.

  • I usually give the kids vita weet with Devon and fruit and sliced carrots and celery with an LCM bar and they love it.

  • I was always sent to all with a sandwich (rotating fillings through the week) with a piece of fruit. They were nice and simple to prepare.

  • Make a batch of Tuna Pasties

or other food like healthy sausage rolls that will freeze easily & can defrost in the lunch box. Fruit is always good, and frozen fruit juices are great in Summer. And a batch or two of healthy muffins or biscuits will see you through the week if you make them on the weekend.

  • I agree with previous suggestions, food that can be made in advance, frozen food is even better!

  • what did you end up making for lunch

  • there are some good comments here

  • It’s hard to find a healthy balance. I struggle , so looking forward to reding these ideas

  • Some really good ideas – will pass on some to my daughter as well.

  • we used to have a simple rotation of sandwiches, pita breads, cruskits and cold meats/salads and spreads. fresh fruit and yogurt and maybe a treat (brownie or biscuit). great idea for freezing muffins, slices and quiches too.

  • One weekend a month we spend a day baking and freezing. Muffins, quiches, biscuits, cakes etc. it’s all about being organised.
