Hello!

I know breastfeeding can work as a contraceptive, but hubby and I have decided to have a go anyways. What are some tell-tale signs that I’m pregnant that I should watch out for? Has anyone else gotten pregnant while still breastfeeding?

  • I had my period after 6 months of breast feeding my daughter and still all while breastfeeding I got pregnant when my daughter was 12 months. If you have a set cycle with your peruod then there is no contraception whatsoever.

  • The obvious sign is that your period is back. But even if you don’t have it back you can still fall pregnant. Other signs are tender breasts, going off your food, nausea, strong sense of smell

  • Breast feeding isn’t a trust worthy contraception, you can still get pregnant whilst breast feeding. If you want to avoid pregnancy, I suggest using a condom too.

  • We’re actually trying to get pregnant. But my 13 month old has a dairy allergy so can’t have cows milk or most formulas. She also has a soy allergy which gets rid of other formulas. Won’t touch rice or oat milk or the few formulas that are left. She likes almond milk but is allergic. So she just won’t wean at the moment. I just don’t know what to look out for when it comes to pregnancy signs as most I experience regardless due to breastfeeding and google is no help

  • Apparently there is a mini-pill you can take that won’t interfere with breastfeeding. I know Mums who have taken it. I suggest you ask your Dr about it. I know a Mum who got pregnant easily and had 4 children under the age of 4 y.o..

  • Definitely can fall pregnant while breastfeeding! I had a friend who never got a period because she fell pregnant before her period restarted (lucky for her) look for your tell tale signs, nausea, weight gain, exhaustion – but given Y iu have a bub these may be common too!

  • I haven’t, but I know people who have. And often they didn’t realise for ages, because all the usual signs were obscured by breastfeeding.
