Hello!

Just wondering everyone’s thoughts on age wise to move into a toddler bed. My daughter is 14months and is already trying to climb out of the cot. Just wanting thoughts and maybe success stories

  • Everyone is different so just base it on your child and when you feel they will be ready

  • It’s been said that a toddler trying to climb out of a cot doesn’t mean they are ready for a bed, it just means they are climbing out of the cot! My eldest was 2 when she went straight into a midrange bed (not quite a loft bed but still high enough up to have drawers and cupboards underneath), my second baby used to climb into the cot as he wanted his bottle. We have a cot that converts into a toddler bed by removing one side. He was in that until he was 4, then went straight into a single bed. My current youngest will need to be in the cot for quite a while, however with number four due this month may have to be out by 2.5 years.
My advice, skip the toddler bed. They are a waste of money as you just have it for a short period of time. Go for a single bed when YOU feel your child is ready

  • I moved my little guy at 13 months when he started to try to climb out and it worked really well for us. He did t try to escape at all nd we had no issues falling out of the bed either. We were very lucky with him.

  • I moved my first DD when she started climbing out of the cot around 16 months and the second at 2 years because it was when she was ready.

  • The day my nearly 2 year old can climb out of her cot she will be moved into a bed. I don’t expect that for a few more months yet because she still uses a sleep suit because she isn’t adjusting well to using blankets.

  • As soon as the little one can climb out of the cot (or attempt!) I would be considering moving them out of the cot. I made sure, that with #1 I practised getting in and out of a bed with him, so that if he was in a bed, then I knew I didn’t have to have an eagle eye on him the entire nap.

  • As soon as mine could climb out, they went to a bed.

  • My sons moved to a bed when they were around 2. I think it all boils down to how your children are behaving. If they are always trying to climb out of their cot it might be safer to put them in a bed. I bought a bed that was low to the ground and put pillows to lift the sides of their mattresses up so they wouldn’t accidently roll out of bed.

  • I waited until my kids were 2 but have heard of people doing it younger. You just need to remember the impact it may have on sleep routines. At that age your child should still have a day nap and changing to a bed they can easily get out of could cause issues.

  • Mine has always been about two years old. But if your child is a great escape artist and your worried about little one hurting him/her self I would say it’s time for a bed. Good luck.

  • My daughter was about that age when she started doing back flips out of her cot and out of fear I moved her to a low single bed. She was fine.

  • We moved our son into a bed around 2 years of age. We involve him in the whole process of setting up a bed, the doona cover, etc. so the transition would be smooth. We also initially put up the side barrier to avoid him falling out.

  • It’s always safe to introduce toddler bed as soon as baby is escaping cot

  • Every kid is different, my son is 16 months and he does day sleeps in his toddler bed, he’s to sleepy at night to climb out of his cot but during the day it’s a different story!

  • 18 months for us. Into a low toddler bed.good luck

  • It was when he wanted to sleep in his bed which I had bought and made up and he felt like a big boy who sleeps in a bed and not a cot, which I think was before he was two which he wanted and I did not force him.

  • Every child is different but my children all moved into a bed just before their 2nd birthday and it worked for them.

  • My daughter had not long ago turned 2 when she started climbing (nice change as my first was 13 months!)
When they show the interest in climbing they only get more determined so now may be a good time. We trialed for day sleeps first, and its rough. You’ll need to be persistent or even be prepared to sleep next to her and slowly creep out once the sleep cycles start.

  • I would say you’re there! When they’re trying to climb out of cot, injury becomes a worry. Have fun with the same issue in a bed for a while

  • does your cot convert to a todder bed? (so no sides on it) i would suggest that first. for us while your daughter is younger we actually moved them straight from the cot to a ‘big kid’ bed around the age of 2, with those bed rails on them. i suppose it all depends on if you think your daughter may be ready for that kind of big step.
