Hello!

Can anyone tell me how you test eggs to see if they are fresh or have gone bad? I know for years there was a test around that you could put in them water, but I can’t remember if they float to the top are they fresh or bad. I have had some given to me and wish to know if they are fresh, as they have come from a farm and not sure if they have gone off. Thanks all

  • I also could never remember the float or sink thing. I think I’d just crack them into a little bowl – one at a time – and give each the sniff test before I used them.

  • yes bad eggs float ! don’t eat them, she can get very sick !

  • I always go by the use by date!

  • if they float they are old, so don’t eat them!!!

  • great answers from the mums

  • fresh eggs will sink. also if you are boiling the eggs, and then peeling them, the fresher the egg, the harder it will be to peel the shell.

  • If they float they are off I think

  • I believe eggs that float are no good

  • Fresh eggs will sink in the bottom water and not fresh eggs will float the air.

  • Fresh eggs will sink to the bottom of the bowl and probably lie on their sides.
Slightly older eggs (about one week) will lie on the bottom but bob slightly.
If the egg balances on its smallest tip, with the large tip reaching for the top, it’s probably close to three weeks old.
Eggs that float at the surface are bad and should not be consumed.

  • christial is correct floating eggs are bad.

  • Thanks, I didn’t know how to check if they were good or bad, now I do.

  • i could not remember whether it was bad if floated or sank, so thank you greatly for that help from you all… Had l bad one…

  • Floating eggs have air or gas in them which are no good. Fresh eggs will sink.

  • Farm fresh eggs will last longer … just pop them in some water if they float they are bad

  • great answers here for you :-)

  • did you work it out?

  • there are some good comments here

  • I’ve always done the water test

  • Fill a pot with water and if it sinks it’s fresh, if it floats it’s off. They float because as they start going bad they get a build up of gas inside which makes them float
