Hello!

I have several plants growing but they keep going to flower/seed and I have conflicting information as to prune that back or dig it up and start again… can you please confirm how I grow broccoli?

  • Thanks for the tips girls, I must try it !

  • I’ve only tried to grow broccoli once and the heads were quite small, so after that one crop I didn’t bother trying again. Sorry I can’t be of any help.

  • You may be allowing the heads to grow too large before you pick them if the first few heads go to seed.

  • If they’re going to flower and seed, I would say you’re simply leaving them in the ground for too long. I’ve never pruned or cut my broccoli back. If you trim the occasional bit off during growing, you’ll have a bigger head at picking time. YUMMO, home grown produce…….you can’t beat it

  • Buy seedlings, plant in rows, and get another punnet every few weeks or it will all be ready at the same time, it is similar to growing cabbage, watch for cabbage moths and worms, you may need to dust for these, if you cut off pieces as it grows it will sprout more, but in most cases it comes up to a head (usually all at the same time) but blanche it and freeze it, nothing beats home grown broccoli and it is easy to grow, mulch and fertilize and water weekly once established if no rain.
