I started my daughter when she was 2 and my son when he was 3, then my other daughter when I forgot to get nappies one night and just did it without while putting her on the toilet when she was 1 year old. My youngest is 3, nearly for and has Down Syndrome and toilet training is still ongoing with her.
I’m having trouble with my 21 month old too. He refuses to go on the toilet no matter how long he sits there. Then gets into the floor and 2 minutes later, does his poo!
ive been on and off toilet training since my son was 16mnths. he new when he wanted to go. His now 2yr.3months and is dry thru the day but wont do numba 2 on potty or toilet. were getting there. tho we have moved house and started playgroup at a new place plus had a baby.
good luck. dont rush it tho
To start with, don’t rush it. Our boys were toilet trained before they turned 2 which was great. Have you tried pull ups? I found these really helped with training, we didn’t rush them, didn’t get angry if they had an accident, they really did most of it on their own, they loved their pull ups!
We tried my son at 2years old and he flatly refused. Then he wanted to go on holidays with the inlaws.
We told him he could if he was out of nappies.
So 3 months before his third bday we had success and it was probably 6 weeks til we were fully trained.
For the first few wees and poos we put matchbox cars on the window ledge. If he went to the toilet he could have a car..This was brilliant
good luck, girls toilet train earlier, boys later. It can be frustrating when your friend’s little girl is easily trained and your boy at 2 isn’t. Kids do learn at different rates. Make it fun and back off if he is upset. Praise your child for their efforts. It will all come together though slowly if a boy.
My tip would be… Don’t rush it. If they aren’t ready it will be a nightmare and they are likely to regress. My first was 3 before she was ready and my second is two and in no rush
I started talking to the kids around two about how they feel wet in nappy, smelly poos, etc. I also let them watch me go to the toilet (have all girls in this house and husband is the only male!), talk about what I am doing. My eldest was toilet trained when we were visiting the inlaws at the time. My second showed an interest at 2.5 years old watching her older sister and refused nappy at the start of a long weekend and encouraged her to go when she told me or I see her holding her bottom. Fully trained in three days as she is in daycare four days and three days at home.
Start in summer when the kids can play outside without many clothes on.
I started my eldest when he was about 2.5yrs, and my youngest began just before he turned 2.
Don’t try and go anywhere that’s far from a toilet when you start training – you don’t want to get stuck in a queue at Coles, and your child to say ‘I need the toilet, NOW’.
Keep nappies on at night until your child has several weeks worth of dry nappies in a row – and use waterproof mattress protectors on their bed.
Good luck!
Im trying to toliet train my 2 yr old twins
they take an interest but are still not sure about it
Its hard work with 2 and 1 toilet so im going to buy pottys
i didnt use pottys for my son and he toilet trained quiet easy at 2-3 yrs
we made a big big deal out of it and cheered like it was the most amazing thing in the world
he loved the praise and it made him want to use the toilet more
you have to make the effort and be patient. Even if they say they want to go and they dont need to or your busy take the time and go to make it a good exciting thing.
Books on using the potty are good. Like Elmo’s one with the sounds
Fingers crossed i can get through this one as well as with my son
I started my first when she was 2, we just had a potty in a place where she could see it and access it, eventually after using it for a while she just wanted to use the toilet. She did well initially until someone mad a huge fuss over her doing a poo on the potty and then she reverted back to using nappies for a little while. My second child has just turned 3 and has been in undies for the better part of last year whilst we are home and for short trips to her sisters school. miss 3 is still in nappies at night, but is super keen to not wear nappies for any day trips now…When she chose to toilet train, she used the potty for about a week and then started using the toilet just like her sister.. It really is an individual thing and I wish you all the best
