Hello!

My husband has just found out he is going away for work in August for 2 nights. Problem is, both of our children are very very attached to him. One night would have been manageable but 2 is just going to be too much for them. We are looking at booking accommodation for me and the two kids close by so he can see them when he gets a chance. We don’t have a lot of money so have never travelled with the kids before….what sort of things do I need to consider when booking accommodation? Any tips or handy hints you can think of? It is about a 2 hour drive from home so will have a car to get around. Hoping we can save money by just getting somewhere with a queen or king bed and the kids can sleep with me (husband will have to stay where work books).

Probably seems a bit silly but our kids are both under 3 and they don’t even like when he works late lol.

  • I would look at self contained cabins. They’re usually cheap, have all you need and are often close to other activities, some even have on site activities. Perfect for families

  • Research the area you are visiting to see where the amenities are, like shops and parks, and try get accommodation close by so you can walk everywhere if needed. I’ve done something similar with my kids before and we booked one bedroom and took an inflatable mattress as well in case three in the bed was too much.

  • Look for hotels that advertise ‘family friendly’ on their sites. Wotif has a good search function for that. Also look at the surrounding ‘entertainment’ or tourist attractions. Eg if it’s near a club district it’s safe to say it’s not very kid friendly, if it’s near a sports stadium it might be :)

  • Just look at the place and try to stay away from places that are too fancy or have pictures that include lots of breakable things in the room. Also if you can be near a park or somewhere to get the kids out and about it will make things easier for you.
