Hello!

My husband and I have been trying for our 2nd baby for the last 4-5 months now. We’re both 26. We’ve both gained weight, so we’ve decided to eat healthier to lose weight. I know it’s only been a short amount of time, but I’m impatient lol!  I’m just curious how long should we keep trying before we seek help? And also wondering if anyone has any tips on helping to conceive? Thanks :)

  • I note this question was posted in 2014, so I hope all went well for you.

  • I’d seek professional help after a year. I believe there are dietary ways that can improve fertility, but it’s been so long I can’t remember. Google might have some answers, or try a compounding chemist.

  • I’d give it 12 months and a healthier stress free lifestyle first

  • My partner and I went for fertility tests after trying for over 12 months. The first test they do is a pregnancy test……..I was 3 weeks pregnant :)

  • We were told 12-18mths as I was under 30 at the time.

  • 12 months is average conception time. Given you’re under 35 it might be longer before a dr would offer any intervention. Have you tried an ovualation testing kit? As someone who fell pregnant the first month but was looking forward to the trying time – enjoy the sex while you can!

  • yeah you have to try for a year before they will look into it

  • Maybe you should relax, it’s proven the more stressed you are the harder it is to fall pregnant. Chat to your dr and see what they say

  • The broad guideline is twelve months, but depending on your medical history your GP may refer you on earlier than that – have a chat to him/her if you’re really anxious.

  • It takes on average 12 months to get pregnant when trying so I don’t think you need to worry just yet but do keep trying! In the meantime you can focus on getting healthy as you’ve mentioned. Good luck x

  • Your doctor won’t send you or your husband for tests until you have been trying for at least 12 months.
I think if it were me I would carry on with the healthy eating and doing the exercise and try and put get pregnant to the back of your minds for a while and you never know it might happen because neither of you will be stressed about falling pregnant so much.
Good luck hope things work out for you and your writing yor pregnant soon :)

  • If you go and see a dr I’m pretty sure they will tell you to come back if you have no success after 12 months in total, so if you want a referral now, stretch the truth a little at your consultation.

  • It’s great that you & your partner are losing weight & getting healthy to assist your chances of conceiving. Generally its wait a year & then seek help from a fertility specialist but speak to your GP in the meantime who might run some tests.

  • Talk to your doctor about it, but they will probably say get down to your goal/healthy weight range, try for a ~6 months then come back to them. Remember that everything has to align within a tiny window each month (at thats if your periods are regular!!). Try not to stress about it and enjoy the trying to conceive part and don’t make it a chore.

  • I am in a similar position right now, having been trying for about 5-6 months now without luck for number 2. A couple of friends said they knew people who had great success with acupuncture so I have started having weekly sessions the past 2 weeks and will see if that brings some success. I think after about 6 months is time you can start looking at support from doctors and others. Good luck
