Panadol for pain and fever, saline drops to unblock the nose, a wee snot pump, eucalyptus balm to rub on their feet and a steamer with eucalyptus drops to easy the breathing

Nurofen or Panadol for fever and pain. Otherwise if it’s just a cold, there isn’t much you can do. I will give them a Vicks rub at night to help with the breathing.

Panadol for fever or if they appear to be in pain, otherwise my gp recommends they fight it off naturally keep fluids up etc.

Only panadol if it’s really necessary, otherwise just lots of cuddles! A nasal aspirator is handy if they have lots of mucus and having trouble breathing/feeding. They are generally used with saline drops – available from the pharmacy. I’d also offer extra feeds, especially if breastfeeding.

If your baby starts coughing badly and is inclined to be wheezing off to the Dr.. Ours gave us a fright. He went down with it really quickly. It was Croup. He was fine at 9.00am By 4.00pm he was coughing, wheezing and gasping for breath. We took him to the Dr. One of the main things was to keep him propped up. If he slid down at all he woke up coughing. I slept in the room with him the first night. I was able to slide him up a little without waking him some of the time. He is a bit of a “wriggle worm”. The Dr. didn’t want to give him medication unless absolutely necessary. He gave us a prescription but we perservered with the other methods and he didn’t need it. My cousin’s baby son had croup several times, so bad that they rushed him to hospital. They put him in a steam tent with menthol in it. He was allergic to Menthol and it made him worse. Having to be in the steam tent resulted in a case of chest congestion. His son has recently had croup too. My friend who had a baby who was diagnosed with Asthma when he was only a week old.

Depending on age, Euky Bear Rub (baby Vicks basically) on their singlet and on my neck, prop their cot up a little, steam the bathroom up (I didn’t have a humidifier back then), be prepared to have them sleep upright on your chest or shoulder. Shut the house up sooner to keep in the warm air. Watch that they are still getting enough fluids. Paracetamol if needed. If they’re struggling too much, off to the GP.

Its horrible when your littlies have the sniffles, I was never a big believer in medications other than panadol, but I swore by the old bulb syringe. It gave them great relief and through the day and the vicks on the feet at night with some panadol helped them sleep. Good luck to you all, it doesn\’t last forever and its nice to be needed. I am past that stage now and I do miss it, (a bit).

I also do the Vicks on their feet..then cotton socks on top. Vaporiser on also and I also roll up a few towels or put a pillow under the mattress just enough raise their head, helps keep their chest clear …. I still do this for our son who\’s 5 now, in fact he prefers to sleep this way now!

Off to the GP for advice.

Keep warm and a little Vicks on outer clothing, not direct skin.

It’s so sad when they get sick! We did pandas, elevated the bassinet a bit and used a humidifier. And lots of cuddles while we waited it out:) we did a doctor trip or tow just to keep and eye on his first cold (and reduce my first time mum worries:)

It depends on how old baby is… I use a vaporiser in the bedroom. Baby Vicks on chest and soles of feet with socks on. If Bub has a runny nose we use the snot sucker. I have purchased the snotty too one as my baby wouldn’t let me near him with the squeeze one. This is quick and easy and works great. From 6 months there is durotuss for children.
