I think there are programs where you can refuse to be sent home with just pain relief. I think it’s nationwide now. You can refuse discharge and ask to be admitted. Our patients sometimes require morphine injections for kidney stone pain relief. There should be other options like a scope or a lithotripsy to blast the stones. Also, ask them to do more studies like some stone can only be surgically removed like staghorns.

Went thru this late last year with my husband, started with a 3mm stone and they said it would move, went home with pain killers, well he got worse and I took him to a private emergency, they referred him to a urologist who admitted him to hospital for dehydration and pain relief, he got better overnight so they assumed it had moved, He was fine for a day or two and then got worse again, the Doctor from the first emergency hospital called for a follow up and we went back and in 2 hours they had done ct scan, bloods and xray, stone had increased to 8 mm, we were referred back to private urologist who admitted him, stabilized him as he was on warfarin and his bloods were bad, they operated on him a couple of days later, blasted the stone, put in a stent, he was in hospital a few days because of the warfarin problem, he then had to go back 2 weeks later for a light anaesthetic and have the stent between the kidney and bladder removed, fortunately we have not had any more problems, My father is a retired farmer and used to get these every summer due to dehydration, he used to drink massive amounts to avoid them, but some people are just prone to get them, I have had one, and I have the most amount of sympathy for anyone with one, they are the worse pain possible and I would be going to the GP and getting a referral to a urologist, because if they have not passed in a week they need intervention.
