Hello!

We have a veggie garden with herbs, tomatoes, beetroot, carrots, onions, capsicum, strawberries and everything is growing fantastic but now the weather is warming the bugs are starting to attack everything. I dont want to use chemicals so was wondering what others have used that works?

  • You might find inspiration and idea’s here

  • You can make up a solution in a spray bottle of Insecticidal Soap

Combine one cup of oil, any variety, such as vegetable, peanut, corn, soybean, (I use olive oil) etc. with one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid (I use Earth Choice) or other “pure” soap. …
Mix two teaspoons of this “soap” mixture to every cup of warm water and put into a spray bottle. Mix only what is needed for a one-day application.

  • I’ve heard of something called white oil that is used for tackling bugs and scale.

  • I sprinkle flour over my tomatoes. This tricks the moths, that like to lay their eggs, into thinking there are already eggs on the plant. The only down side you have to re sprinkle the flour every week or after it has rained. I have had worm free tomatoes for years.

  • We use coffee and egg shells for snails

  • Coffee grounds get rid of snails and slugs ????????

  • I’ve heard of garlic, water and earth safe dish washing liquid (gardening show). Used it a few years ago myself – not sure if it worked or I was just lucky. I haven’t used it on any fruit so can’t say if it flavours them.
There are also certain plants that naturally repel pests – curry plant may be one of them from memory

  • This is the 3rd question I’ve seen like this, I’m loving the answers as I’m just planting my own veggie garden. I’ve also read coffee grounds sprinkled around and also black pepper

  • Good question; am getting a garden ready for summer.

  • natural Pyrethium is fantastic on any creepy crawlys that might want to munch on your garden but are also completely safe!

  • DIY eco soap, chilli and oil spray seems to work with some things

  • I’ve heard of chilli and garlic spray, but I haven’t tried it yet so I don’t know if you’ll taste it on your veggies.

  • Diatomaceous Earth is great, it kills all insects and is harmless to animals and humans. Just be careful not to breathe in or get in your eyes. It can be easily bought on line and you can then read all about this wonderful natural wonder.

  • Put lots of Herbs in betweeN and small flowers too act as a repellent

  • Thank you everyone, i have all them essential oils so will give that a go and will also do 1 bed with the onion/garlic spray and see which works best, will post a pic in next couple days of the veggie patch.

  • Ants hate talcum powder. They don’t like getting it on their feet/legs as it is slippery. You cxan use any cheap talcum powder. If you grow spring onions amongst your carrots pests will not attack the root section of your carrots. You can also use leeks but they take a lot longer to grow and you can easily disturb them when pulling carrots. Leeks also take a ot more space. Basil is a good companion plant for tomatoes. Pyrethum Spray is made from Pyrethrum Spray but they say it nothing it has been sprayed on should be touched for 24 hours….and shouldn’t be used on a hot day. Maybe ask at a garden centre and make sure they understand that you want only organic products. I don’t know where you live but a couple of years we had fruit and vegetables attacked by fruit rats. They will bite chunks out but never eat the whole thing. I know Fruit rats love tomatoes and citrus fruit, We have picked fruit (especially apricots) only to find that the ants have made a tiny hole (you have to look for it) and are eating the fruit from the inside out. You pick them and suddenly find yourself covered in some very unfriendly ants. Are you sure the birds aren’t attacking them too? Some just stick the end of the beaks in and if they aren’t ripe enough leave them others take a bite out of them. Some bugs only come out at night. If you are able to check them with a torch at night inluding the underneath of the leaves. I always listen to the talk-back gardening show on the radio at weekends. If you are in SA it is on 5AA from 6.00am. I think it finishes at either 9.00am or 10,00am on Sat. and Sunday. If it is a public holiday on a Fri. or Mon. they are often on then too. Apparently some people can pick the station up from some areas interstate. If you want to ring them and you are calling from a country or interstate area give them your phone number and they will call you back. I hope this helps you.

  • We have used this one :
    Onion and Garlic Spray
Mince one clove of garlic and one medium sized onion. Add to a quart of water. Wait one hour and then add one teaspoon of cayenne pepper and one tablespoon of liquid soap to the mix. This organic spray will hold its potency for one week if stored in the refrigerator.
    Best of luck.

  • Add the following ingredients to a spray bottle, shake well and spray liberally:
    4 drops citronella essential oil
    4 drops lemongrass essential oil
    4 drops rosemary essential oil
    4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
    4 drops mint essential oil
    1/4 cup pure witch hazel

  • We’ve had some success keeping snails and slugs at bay by placing halved oranges upside down in the garden. After using them for juice, we put them in the garden around the edge and the snails and slugs are attracted to them and get trapped underneath making it easy to remove them the next day. Apparently grapefruit work well too.

  • I’ve read a lot of bugs hate peppermint oil
