Hello!

My sister-in-law will be staying with us for a week. She’s lovely, but a little bossy. I never feel comfortable with house guests. How do other MoM’s feel about people staying over?

  • We don’t have guests stay over that often, we live 40 minutes from all our family and friends.
My sister is much younger than me but we are very close and she is close with my partner too, and she stays over in school holidays.
Occasionally my partners best mate stays over but only if they’re planning on having a few drinks together.
A few nights of the year with guests is ok, but my partner and I couldn’t cope with weeks at a time.

  • Guests staying over for a week can be nice, as long as I can do still my own thing !

  • I don’t mind it when it’s my friends, but my husband’s family? I have to bite my tongue every moment they’re here. I hate it.

  • I don’t mind providing they don’t have expectations of what they want. I’m not here to entertain them and if they can just fit in with how my home runs smoothly its okay. Fresh sheets and fresh towels and good company is nice for a little while for your guest. I suppose it depends on how long they stay also.

  • I don’t love it like I used too probably because I’m such a routine person.

  • If it’s my family I’m fine with it as it relieves the tedium of normal life. But can understand its different with in laws

  • Thanks for all your replies. The week went by quickly and my sister-in-law was lovely.

  • Totally depends who it is and what your relationship is like with them. We’re lucky that we’ve good a great ‘guest room’ with their own ensuite so they’re more comfortable and not using our bathroom when kids are trying to get ready for school, us for work etc – they have their own space to hide away too. I love it most the time and enjoy the company and often help around the house.

  • I heard a saying that house guests are like fish – they go off in 3 days. I think I kinda agree. It’s nice to have them for a bit but I’m a home body and like my home to myself.

  • yeah it is not fun after a few days lol!

  • I was brought up by my overprotective critical mum for many years and all of us dislike bossy people . I don’t mind say a boss telling me what to do , but it is triggering if it someone else . It is easier to handle of you know her well but it is a bit harder if you are not sure how to take her . Perhaps talk to your husband and see what he thinks and hopefully the week will go quick for you .

  • Summer time is a wonderful time for house guests – bbq’s and warm weather.

  • No not my cup of tea. I love our space and our own peace and quite.

  • I love house guests – a week is a good timeframe.

  • I can imagine! They’ve been very disrespectful!
I think it would be nice to have guest, if you’ve got a granny flat. At least you are not together all the time. But I would expect them to keep it clean anyway.

  • I feel like I asked this question as you just described my SIL. I despise houseguest, they come when they have something else on nearby and say “we only want a bed” but they don’t. There’s all the washing after their departure and the last time they stayed I told myself was the last time – they took over my kitchen, had their box of snacks but ate all my food, put the EMPTY butter container back in the fridge, drank all my milk and ate all my bread. Nice. My house is small and they are a famiky of 4 – had 2 people sleeping in my loungeroom while we watched tv around them. They didn’t see a problem with this – I felt claustrophobic. Our spareroom is now full of junk and I’m not in a hurry to clean it

  • It is fine for a day or two but l guess we all like our own space!

  • I don’t usually like house guests because I like to relax at home and when others are staying over I’m constantly cleaning, fiddling, and making sure everything is ok.

  • I like it for a couple of days. Not more than that. I like my privacy and with guests around for a longer time, I wouldn’t feel at home.

  • Unless its my best friend or my dad, I HATE IT!!! I feel judge and incompetent and feel like I can’t discipline my kids and feel like my kids are a bother hahaha.
