  • Plus it gets you to buy discretionary items – which usually means you’re spending extra cash.

  • I read this and thought “nah, that doesn’t sound right!” But when I thought about it and checked out this weeks catalogues, there is an awful lot of crap food on special. Sad isn’t it?

  • I never look at those catalouges. Woolworths sends weekly my personalized specials (the things I buy and they offer on special). I prefer not to buy junk, but lots of health foods. Woolworths offers those on special in their weekly emails, which is good. And otherwise I don’t buy on special, but just what I want and need.

  • Unfortunately I realized that all what is cheap, people buy. I don’t even check Coles and Woolies catalogue any more, because I’m sick of that colourful rubbish. I buy, bread, milk, fish, meat, fruit & vegetables.

  • i usually try to bypass all the junk food

  • I think they do that so customers will buy on impulse even when it is not needed

  • I guess its designed to get customers into their stores.

  • It’s a marketing tactic. Which works for a lot of people but i just skip through the catalogues until I see some healthy foods.

  • True. It’s abit sad really..The crap is cheap so we buy it. Cheap and colourful. Kids are happy..but its all a quick fix. Big companies make . money. It’s our health. be brighter and reach for fruit and vegetables. abag of carrots is cheap really. Just we think of it as boring!

  • It’s always the way isn’t it? I guess it’s what gets people through the door or they wouldn’t bother advertising it.

  • I am glad that i am not the only one thinking this!!! Every week it’s the same things on special. IT would be nice to see some of the every day things too – but I guess they use the “everyday low price” thing there.

  • true they are the draw cards for a lot of young families, unfortunatly.. The upside is there are also a lot of discounted meat fruit and veg etc reduced for quick sale. Meat if bought on the date of purchase with that date as use by can in fact be frozen for later. I sometimes have veg only days when there is an inexpensive glut of them. Not just to boil! but roast veg in winter or I make veg pizza’s to eat and freeze as once veg cooked can be frozen (not potatoes) lots of cheese topping delicious

  • I find most of the catalogues only advertise junk foods on sale – in store is a totally different kettle of fish. I love IGA, they have specials and sales on all different lines of groceries, not just chips, chocolates and ready made meals! Awesome deals on rice, fruit and vegetables – I find them so much better than Coles or Safeway!

  • Two reasons to suck us in when we go shopping hungry a easy target (try never to do this), and for kids lunch boxes… ! Thats why i find it easier if you do a large shop to do it online after a big meal that way you do not get sucked in and only stock up on the specials you need.. Some days they have free delivery (or its free if over a set amount. you just have to get in early andbook it and find out the cut off time for adjustments before it gets delivered adjust it to whats really needed..

  • so aldi opened and a new shopping complex and we are treated to a price war! $1 strawberry, avcardos and caulis!!!

  • Some of the specials can be good when stocking up for something special, like Christmas/parties.

  • Just stop looking in the catalouges, it’s a waist of time :) Step into the store, see if there are fruits and veggies on special and just do your shoppings without being foccussed what’s on special, I garantee you that you’ll safe money ;)
I made beautiful healthy raw chocolate with my son y’day, so no desire to buy any chocolate from the store.

  • Yep, all the time hey. I’d love to see some of their organic range on sale every now and then.

  • I wish they were more responsible too and also that the government legislated a lot more to tax supermarkets and make supermarkets sell better produce that wouldn’t cost the health system so many billions when people get sick from the supermarket food.. There are so many parallels with cigarette smoking and junk food. Food manufacturers are able to put unhealthy things in foods (eg trans fats, sugar, salt) that are known to cause human health problems, which other countries have banned, and whose only purpose is to make the product last longer on the shelf to maximise profits for a few people (making money from everyone getting sick and paying taxes to support the health system). Doesn’t seem right.

  • They are. my partner stocks the shelves at Woolworth and every night the junk food isles need the most restocking.
    they are what sells.
yet people claim they don’t know why there is an obesity epidemic.
