Having mince in the freezer means there’s always a quick, easy meal that can be made.

Think spaghetti bolognaise, rissoles, macaroni beef or spice it up with chilli beef or tacos, the list goes on. Things like meat loaf and shepherd’s pie are also good old-fashioned favourites.

A meal of mince can go a long way. When you have unexpected mouths to feed add grated carrots, zucchini and slices of bread to bulk it up. Mince is also a great way to smuggle veggies into a family meal.

Make a meal for one using leftover savoury mince in jaffles, on toast or stuff it into a jacket potato.

Mince lends itself well to the basic one pan dinner. Spray a frypan with cooking spray. Fry off the mince with some minced garlic and dried herbs, stir in some frozen veggies, beef stock, and pasta then add water and simmer until the pasta is cooked. Dinner is served.

Planning a cooking day? Add mince to the list. With a little forward planning, you can have delicious home-cooked frozen meals on hand for days when you arrive home late or just don’t feel like cooking.

3 quick tips:

  • Buy premium mince as you really do get what you pay for. You will notice that the higher the grade of mince the redder it is. Buy in bulk, it’s usually cheaper.
  • When freezing mince flatten out so it becomes long and thin. This way it will freeze quicker and thaw quicker too.
  • When adding mince to the pan, add it gradually so the pan so the pan doesn’t become cold, this way the meat will fry rather than stew.

  • I love preparing lasagne with minced beef, or a Shepherd’s pie, or bifteki (Greek meatballs with feta cheese). I love minced chicken for burgers. And minced beef and kidney beans to fill tacos. 🙂

  • I love blending together zucchini, onions, carrot and celery into a thick sauce, adding a can of diced tomatoes, some garlic and dried herbs. Then taking mince and frying it until well cooked before adding the vegetable sauce. This is a really lovely sauce served over pasta, in pasta bake or in lasagna.
