Article Going, Going, Gone … Coles Makes Major Change From Next Month

If, like many shoppers, you consistently forget to take your own shopping bags to Coles – you’ll need to get into the habit quick smart!

Coles has announced it will stop selling soft-plastic shopping bags in stores across Australia and online by the end of June.

It comes after Woolworths recently announced it will stop selling soft-use plastic bags by June.

Coles says it will remove 230 million plastic bags from circulation in one year.

“Today’s decision to no longer offer soft-plastic bags at the checkout is proof of our commitment to reduce the amount of plastic used in our stores and online,” said Coles Group Chief Operations and Sustainability Officer Matt Swindells.

“The most sustainable option is to bring your own reusable bag to the supermarket, but for those who forget, we will continue to sell 100% recycled paper bags that can be recycled kerbside, as well as other reusable options.”

Coles claims that the 100% recyclable paper bags have been tested to hold up to six kilos of groceries.

In 2018 Coles removed single-use plastic carry bags from checkouts, which it says has saved around 14,000 tonnes of plastic from being produced annually.

The 100% recyclable bags are available to buy in store for 25-cents, or you can choose from reusable tote bags which range from $1 to $2.50 each. From next week, paper bags will be used for home delivery and Click&Collect orders, or you can choose to go bagless.

Meanwhile, Woolworths stores in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania began phasing out 15-cent reusable shopping bags last month. They’d already been removed from the ACT, NT, SA, QLD and WA over the past 12 months.

  • That’s great. There is too much plastic. I try to take my own bags but do forget a lot. Sometimes I buy the paper bags, sometimes plastic, sometimes material. Happy to use only paper and/or material bags.

    Can’t believe a paper bag can hold up to 6 kilos!
    I always have a few bags in my handbag and a whole bunch in the boot.

  • I wish you could bring back your paper bags to Coles or Woolworths for them to be reused for click and collect. We get so many bags each time. Sometimes there’s one one item in the bag… It’s a terrible waste.
    I use our paper bags to collect greenwaste, then I dump it all in the green bin.

  • Good idea. There’s enough soft plastics which were to be recycled just sitting in storage lots. They may need to offer an option of no bags or paper bags for deliveries.

  • This is great! Although I wish they’d return to a bagless solution for home delivery.

    • My Coles offers bagless home delivery? Maybe worth contacting the store to investigate?
