How often to wash your bedsheets is a contentious issues, with varying opinions, but research says we’re probably not doing it anywhere near as much as we should.

Some people are adamant that once a week is the perfect amount to launder sheets, others say it’s doesn’t need to be done that regularly.

Australian scientist Dr Karl has revealed just how often we should wash our sheets, based on our activities during the day.

Why do you have to regularly wash your sheets regularly?

Before diving into the contentious issue of sheet washing, Dr Karl explained why we should be regularly washing them.

“Every day you generate, from your skin, about one and a half grams of dead skin cells, which both attract and are enough food for a million dust mites,” Dr Karl explained. “And then on top of that your skin exudes oils and sweat. And on the other hand while you’re lying in bed you may have a little fart.”

So our bed sheets are absorbing dirt, dead skill cells, body oils and sweat not to mention dust mites and their poo. Gross.

When you consider that most of us spend somewhere between 50 and 60 hours per week sleeping in our beds, that’s a whole lot of build up!

How often should you wash your sheets?

Dr Karl says it all depends on what you do during the day, and just before you get into bed. But it ranges from twice a week to every fortnight.

“Well if you’re in a very sweat environment and you sweat during the day and you come home all sweaty and then you don’t shower before you go to bed and you don’t wear pyjamas, well maybe twice a week.

“At the other extreme, cold environment, don’t sweat, wear pyjamas and have a shower before you go to bed, maybe every couple of weeks.

“The average is every two weeks. And according to one survey in England, four percent of people wash their sheets once a year and men who are in relationships wash their sheets once a month. And men who are not in relationships, once every six weeks. Which might explain why they’re not in a relationship.”

  • I do the kids sheets once a fortnight and ours less frequently, when I get a chance. Sure, I’d like to do it more often but sometimes you have to pick your priorities.

  • We all shower before bed and I change the sheets about every three weeks in winter and every 7 to 10 days in summer.

  • I love the feeling of clean sheets. We shower before bed and usually wash the sheets every couple of weeks. I’d love to do it weekly but it’s so hard to fit in all the washing between working, clothes washing, and cloth nappies.

  • I wish my partner would read this, he never changes our bedding

  • Not sure how often my sheets are changed/washed. I generally do it when I feel like it and if the weather’s right

  • I change the sherts more frequently than I wash them as each bed has a few sets. Some beds in the house get changed much more often than others

  • We wash the sheets at least once a fortnight. I also like to use Bosistos Eucalyptus Dust mite spray on my mattress once a month. It freshens it up a lot and hopefully decreases the amount of dust mites in our bed :)

  • need to get into a habit of washing more regularly – it’s fortnightly at the moment, would like to do it weekly but depends on the crazy weather most times!

  • Yes I wash my sheets and underlay every week and also vacuum the Mattress but blankets and doonas every month

  • This is a habit I need to work on…. shuddering

  • Can’t do twice a week with 5 beds in the house and especially not in winter!

    Reply

  • I suppose we average once a fortnight, but if they feel/ look dirty then it’s done more regularly. I probably should change pillow cases more often for skin/ hair reasons.

  • I wash ours sheets once a fortnight and our doona cover once a month. We have a top sheet so I don’t feel the need to wash the cover any sooner, and if it’s double-sided it gets flipped when I change the sheets.

  • Well as long as we all shower and are hygienic I think fortnightly is fine!

  • Twice a week is so much factored in with full time jobs, responsibilities and kids! Its just not realistic for a lot of families

  • We’re once a week. I’d love to do it more often, but it’s a huge job with multiple beds, so once a week it is.

  • I have young children and i should orobably wash frequently as they are jumping every where but am so exhausted and changing the sheets takes forever! Will try to do it more often now
